Mesm Tokyo's Afternoon Exhibition: Rembrandt's "Light and Shadow"
The Mesm Tokyo, part of the Autograph Collection, is proud to announce the second collaboration with the National Museum of Western Art, featuring the afternoon exhibition, Chapter 17: "Rembrandt — The Light of Dutch Arts," running from June 1 to September 30, 2026.
This unique exhibition resides in the 16th-floor bar and lounge, "Whisk," featuring a special menu that channels the essence of Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, the celebrated 17th-century Dutch painter and printmaker. Guests will enjoy a gastronomic experience where exquisite sweets and savory dishes artfully reflect the artist's iconic play with light and shadow.
While traditional afternoon tea is often marked by colorful and lavish presentations, this exhibition takes a different approach, focusing on the monochromatic beauty and subtle gradations of shadow through a sensory exploration of art. At Mesm Tokyo, visitors can enjoy an immersive experience that tantalizes the senses, depicting Rembrandt's artistic legacy on a plate.
The exhibition’s culinary offerings are inspired by Dutch cuisine, presenting traditional dishes rarely encountered in Japan. These include, among others,
Poffertjes (mini Dutch pancakes), herring sandwiches,
Tompoes, croquettes, and apple tart. Each dish is reinvented with a unique Mesm twist, inviting guests to enjoy flavors that resonate with the heritage of Rembrandt's homeland.
One standout feature of the main sweets and pairing drinks showcases the profound shadows and lingering light found in Rembrandt's paintings. The dessert thoughtfully incorporates the etching technique, further emphasizing its sculptural beauty, illustrating the interaction of darkness and light through a combination of rich dark cacao sauce and creamy panna cotta that creates an evocative representation of Rembrandt's world.
The National Museum of Western Art will also host the special exhibition, "The Printmaker Rembrandt: Challenges, Traditions, and Impact," from July 7 until September 23, 2026. Visitors are encouraged to explore both the hotel and the museum, deepening their appreciation of Rembrandt's artistry and the vibrant atmosphere of Tokyo during this unforgettable summer.
