International Conference on Vocational Education Launches New Skills Development Platform
World Conference on Vocational Education 2024
The 2024 World Conference on the Development of Vocational and Technical Education kicked off on Thursday in Tianjin, northern China. The event provides a significant platform for discussing and sharing various educational achievements and experiences, most notably emphasizing China's advancements in skills development.
During the conference, participants reviewed the significant steps taken in vocational education and training (VET) in China, which has led to improved job skills, quality, and accessibility in vital industries. Critical to this dialogue was the acceptance of the 'Tianjin Consensus on Global Vocational Education Development', which aims to enhance international cooperation in this field.
Acknowledgments from International Leaders
Grahame Morton, New Zealand's Ambassador to China, praised the country's efforts to modernize its vocational education system. He highlighted how these improvements contribute to increased employability and quality of education in vital sectors.
Muferihat Kamil, the Ethiopian Minister of Labor and Skills, emphasized the significance of the Lu-pan workshops established in Ethiopia, stating that thousands of Ethiopian youth have benefited from technical education of a global standard. This educational framework prepares them for an ever-evolving global economy.
Kamil expressed gratitude towards China for its innovative support and investments that strengthen the workforce and promote sustainable development in Ethiopia. To date, 34 Lu-pan workshops have been established in 30 countries, including Thailand, Cambodia, Portugal, Djibouti, Egypt, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.
Showcasing Successes in Vocational Education
A special exhibition during the conference showcased the successes of the Lu-pan workshops designed to empower youth in partner countries. Notably, a section on intelligent transport highlighted advancements in automotive maintenance and smart transportation systems, as well as urban railway systems.
The establishment of the World Federation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training was announced, with Kamil calling it a timely initiative that aligns well with Ethiopia's vision for global collaboration. This federation aims to amplify partnerships, drawing from China's impressive skills development successes as a model for African nations.
Insights for Africa
Mustafa Mohamed Mahmoud, the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training of Djibouti, shared with the Global Times that he gathered valuable insights from the discussions, particularly those offered by Chinese experts concerning the mechanisms applied in managing and developing their vocational education system. As the world faces an industrial and technological revolution, IMF emphasizes that African countries must keep pace with global developments.
The conference attracted over 1,200 representatives from both domestic and international backgrounds, including more than 600 foreign guests representing over 100 different countries. Its theme, "Innovation Fuels the Future, Skills Illuminate New Lives," encapsulates the spirit of collaboration and advancement in vocational education.
This event signifies not just a forum for knowledge exchange, but a critical stepping stone towards creating a unified approach to vocational training worldwide, ensuring that no region is left behind in the quest for quality education and skill development.
