Immerse Yourself in the Energetic World of Makuta Kaishin's Calligraphy Exhibition

The Energetic World of Makuta Kaishin

From January 30th to February 5th, 2026, the Ueno Royal Museum will host a captivating exhibition by renowned calligrapher Makuta Kaishin, entitled "The Calligraphy of Kaishin Makuta: Beyond Tradition." This exhibition promises to deliver an emotional experience as Kaishin presents 200 brand new pieces, showcasing art that has garnered excitement in Paris and New York.

Celebrating Ancient Scripts

Kaishin, known internationally as 'KAISHIN', draws inspiration from the ancient art of pictographs, crafted over 3,000 years ago. His pieces echo the deep connections our ancestors had with nature, their prayers, and everything they revered, articulated beautifully through modern colors and brush strokes. The artist invites viewers not merely to acknowledge the pieces intellectually, but to immerse themselves in the raw energy that these characters embody.

In a unique twist on the conventional viewing experience, Kaishin urges attendees to abandon their quest for meaning: "Do not read the characters. Instead, bathe in the energy they emit." This innovative exploration aims to free viewers from the constraints of understanding, allowing them to engage with the vibrant life force that his work conveys.

Live Calligraphy Performances

Adding to the exhibition's allure, live calligraphy performances will take place on January 31st and February 1st, starting at 13:30 each day. Attendees will witness Kaishin's dynamic process as he creates breathtaking pieces live in the serene confines of the museum. The striking sound of the brush, the splatter of ink, and the powerful breathing of the artist will provide a sensory feast for all.

An Authentic Encounter with Art

Makuta Kaishin believes in the transformative power of art in today's fast-paced world, where people are often averse to silence and introspection. Many attendees of his exhibitions have shared their experiences, revealing how confrontation with Kaishin's art has dispelled the noise cluttering their minds, sparking rejuvenating energy from deep within.

One of the centerpiece works, "Kunryu Fuko" (Cloud and Dragon, Wind and Tiger), features a breathtaking scene where powerful dragon and tiger face off in a clash of life forces set against a fiery red landscape. The drawing embodies the intensity of opposing powers; each stroke ignites the paper, infusing it with the sheer essence of life—the ultimate strength of the art form.

About Makuta Kaishin

Born in 1947 in Kitakyushu, Japan, Kaishin started pursuing calligraphy at the age of 17. He held his first solo exhibition in Ginza in 1982 and has since exhibited extensively across renowned locations like New York and Paris. Celebrated internationally for his engaging style, Kaishin received the French honors of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

His works are now part of prestigious collections including those in the Chuson-ji Temple and the French Madeleine Church—a testament to his impact on the global art scene.
