School for International Training Launches New Campaign
In a bid to empower the next generation of global leaders, the School for International Training (SIT) has recently introduced its campaign titled
"Step into the Map. Every Street Teaches." This initiative encourages college students to immerse themselves in the diverse cultures and experiences Europe has to offer while studying abroad. Through this campaign, SIT aims to provide students with enriched academic experiences that extend far beyond the classroom.
Carol Jenkins, the CEO of World Learning — SIT's parent organization — emphasizes the significance of experiential learning in forming a well-rounded educational journey. According to Jenkins,
“SIT's programs tackle critical global issues that affect populations worldwide.” With accessible travel options across Europe, students can leverage their time abroad to approach these global challenges from a multitude of cultural, political, and geographical perspectives. Jenkins, who has held the CEO position since 2017, aims to foster a generation of informed global citizens.
Historically, Europe has remained a hotspot for study abroad programs. As highlighted in the latest
2024 Open Doors Report by the U.S. Department of State, over
64% of American students who ventured abroad during the 2022-2023 academic year chose Europe as their destination. SIT, which has played a significant role in international education since its inception, offers almost
30 programs across major European countries and cities, alongside opportunities for unique learning experiences in locations such as Iceland's Arctic Circle and Portugal's Azores.
One of the standout offerings of this campaign is the new
International Honors Program (IHP), which allows students to experience multiple countries within Europe and delve into specific fields of study. Traditionally a multi-continent program, the newly launched four IHP Europe programs enable students to live in three different countries while concentrating on critical contemporary issues like biodiversity, public health, and comparative politics. This innovative approach emphasizes SIT's commitment to broadening students' horizons while grounding their studies in practical and diverse settings.
Further catering to the evolving needs of students, SIT has expanded its program offerings to include degree minors at no additional cost, alongside customizable
"Choose Your Track" options. Feedback from students has informed these changes, leading to an enhanced focus on enriching the educational experience.
SIT's dedication to the holistic academic experience is underscored by its unique homestay structure, a favorite aspect among participants. Additionally, to adapt to students' needs, several programs now feature residential housing options.
Dr. Said Graiouid, the Provost at SIT, emphasizes the institution's focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences. He asserts that SIT's expertise, rooted in decades of immersive international education, sets it apart from competitors. The faculty members, often living and raised in the countries where programs are based, bring authentic knowledge and deep community ties to the classroom.
Part of SIT's mission also revolves around ecological and environmental studies. Approximately one-third of its European programs delve into topics such as sustainability and climate change, offering students unique opportunities to learn from wetlands and glaciers to geothermal fields and volcanoes. Dr. C. Palmer, SIT’s academic director in Iceland, describes the profound connections students establish with the local environment, stating,
“Students get to be local on a global scale.” This perspective not only informs their studies but also allows for independent, guided research opportunities that tie them closely to the land.
The emphasis on international education is crucial in forming responsible global citizens, regardless of whether they pursue careers in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors. SIT insists on creating a learning atmosphere that combines dynamic, individualized education, ensuring students receive comprehensive training.
With a focus on various disciplines ranging from global health and diplomacy to environmental justice, SIT’s summer and semester programs in Europe continue to grow and evolve. Each program undergoes ongoing risk assessments, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of participants, while maintaining 24/7 support from the U.S.
Established in 1964 as a training hub for Peace Corps volunteers, SIT has since developed into a globally accredited university, offering a multitude of undergraduate programs as well as graduate-level opportunities. At its core, SIT prepares students to become impactful changemakers through engaging, experiential learning that addresses pressing global issues.
