Exploring Major Maritime Achievements at the 2026 North Bund Forum in Shanghai

The 2026 North Bund Forum: A Leap Forward in Maritime Transport

The 2026 North Bund Forum was officially inaugurated on October 20 in Shanghai, revealing a total of 20 pivotal achievements in the maritime transport sector. This forum, which aims to enhance collaboration and innovations in maritime practices, highlighted various initiatives aimed at fostering international cooperation, ecological sustainability, and the integration of advanced digital technologies within the industry.

Key Features of the Forum

During the opening ceremony, a series of significant announcements set the stage for the forum. These accomplishments can be categorized into governmental initiatives and private sector efforts emphasizing ecological transformation and premium shipping services. A total of eight government-led initiatives and twelve initiatives focused on ecological transition were introduced, demonstrating a strong strategic synergy among participating organizations, which included international bodies, government ministries, industry associations, and maritime enterprises.

One notable development was the agreement signed by the Chinese Ministry of Transport with the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This memorandum aims to strengthen maritime capacity building through partnerships that include a green maritime corridor initiative connecting China and France, as well as improving talent mobility in the maritime sector.

The Role of Technology in Maritime Innovation

Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the IMO, stressed the importance of cooperation and shared experiences during his remarks at the forum. He specifically praised the role of the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Asia, located at the Shanghai Maritime University, in advancing regional collaboration, promoting the implementation of new technologies, and enhancing training and development.

John Denholm, President of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), expressed a significant interest in the perspectives of the China Shipowners’ Association. He anticipates that their involvement will bolster the ICS committees with valuable insights drawn from China's experiences in technological advancements and other critical areas, potentially informing policy formulation and regulatory changes.

Focus on Eco-Friendly Maritime Practices

Eco-friendly maritime practices took center stage at the forum with presentations emphasizing the collaboration on the green maritime corridor and accompanying annual development reports. Innovations such as a certification system for green fuels were also introduced, reinforcing how international collaboration could significantly contribute to the energy transition within the maritime transport sector by establishing standards and developing pertinent services.

According to the Xinhua-Baltic International Maritime Transport Development Index for 2026, released in July, Shanghai has surpassed London in overall performance for the first time, securing its position as the second-best city worldwide for maritime activities. The bustling Shanghai port processed over 55.06 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2025, further asserting its claim as the world’s most dynamic container port for the 16th consecutive year.

Conclusion

The 2026 North Bund Forum not only showcased significant achievements in maritime transport but also laid the groundwork for future international collaborations focused on sustainability and technological advancement. With strong governmental backing and robust participation from various stakeholders, the forum established a solid foundation for developing a more sustainable maritime future while enhancing Shanghai’s position as a global maritime hub.
