Futakotamagawa Rise to Host Its First Children's Noh Experience Workshop

Futakotamagawa Rise's 11th Annual Noh Festival

The Futakotamagawa Rise, a large multi-purpose complex directly connected to the Futakotamagawa Station of the Tokyu Den-en-toshi and Oimachi Lines, will be hosting the 11th Annual Futakotamagawa Rise Noh Festival this September. On the 12th and 13th, visitors will have the unique opportunity to engage with traditional Japanese performing arts in an accessible and enjoyable setting.

What is Noh?

Noh is a classical Japanese theatrical art form characterized by its use of masks, beautiful costumes, and movements that accompany singing, known as "utai." This highly refined and historic performance art continues to captivate audiences today, making it a vital aspect of Japan's cultural heritage.

Since the opening of the Futakotamagawa Rise Terrace Market in 2016, the Noh and Kyogen performances have become a staple of the event calendar, drawing in both traditional arts enthusiasts and local community members alike. This event serves as a fantastic opportunity for attendees to engage with and appreciate these time-honored art forms right in their neighborhood.

Exciting New Features This Year

In a shift from previous years where performances were held outdoors as "Makino Noh," this year’s festival will take place at the Futakotamagawa Rise Studio & Hall, protecting attendees from inclement weather. A highlight of this year's event is the inaugural children's workshop titled "Kids Noh Experience Workshop," aimed at introducing young audiences to the wonders of Noh theatre. This hands-on experience will allow children to engage with the art form through activities such as learning Noh movements and singing traditional pieces together.

Festival Performance Schedule

The festival will feature two main performances:
1. Kumasaka (Noh) - Based on the legendary tale of the Heian-era thief Kumasaka Tōhō, this poignant narrative captures the haunting emotions of a noble warrior confronting his fate.
