Explore the Elegance of Wajima Lacquerware: A Design and Craftsmanship Showcase

The upcoming exhibition, "The Peak of Wajima Lacquerware: The Charm of Design and Technique," will be running from April 29 to May 23, 2025, at Gallery 4751, located in Chuo-ku, Tokyo. Organized by asyouare Co., Ltd., this display promises to take visitors on a journey through the exquisite world of Wajima lacquerware that flourished during the Taisho and Showa periods.

This unique showcase will feature a curated selection of 30 remarkable bowls drawn from a private collection owned by Mr. A, each telling its story through intricate craftsmanship and rich tradition. These bowls are crafted from the finest techniques of Wajima lacquerware and include a variety of pieces made for samples and custom orders. Notably, many of them have survived the ravages of past earthquakes and floods, symbolizing resilience alongside artistic beauty.

The appeal of Wajima lacquerware lies not only in its exquisite decorative techniques but also in the sheer quality of the materials and craftsmanship. Visitors will be able to engage with various embellishment methods such as maki-e (sprinkled picture), kin-zaiku, and unique coloring techniques. The exhibition will highlight these themes and provide insights into significant motifs like treasures and chrysanthemum patterns. Moreover, it will explore the shaping, decoration methods, and seasonal or festival-themed design concepts that characterize Wajima lacquerware.

In line with their commitment to supporting local communities, a portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to recovery efforts for the Noto Peninsula, aiming to aid those affected by recent disasters.

The exhibition will be open to the public from 13:00 to 19:00, and the gallery will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Visitors are encouraged to explore the finesse and artistry that have made Wajima lacquerware a treasured part of Japan’s cultural heritage.

After the exhibition, visitors can connect with the expertise of Yushi Akimoto, a respected emeritus professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, who is overseeing the event, ensuring an experience that is both educational and inspirational.
