Research Reveals High Happiness Rates Among Married Individuals with Dating Experience

High Happiness Rates Among Married Individuals with Dating Experience

A recent survey conducted by Naco-do Institute, under the management of Iromono Co., Ltd, reveals that 82.9% of married individuals who have experienced dating report feeling happy in their current marriages. The study, titled "2026 Survey on Dating and Happy Marriages," was published on June 10, 2026 and surveyed 800 married individuals aged 20-49 across Japan.

Key Findings

1. Overall Happiness: The survey found that a significant majority, 82.9%, described their current marriage as happy. Out of this, 40.4% labeled themselves as "very happy" and 42.5% as "somewhat happy".
2. Demographic Independence: Surprisingly, happiness levels did not significantly vary across different genders, ages, occupations, income brackets, or parental status.
3. Personal Understanding Correlation: The research highlights an interesting correlation between happiness and the understanding of oneself before marriage. Those who scored higher on the Personal Dating Score, a measure of self-awareness regarding values and desired relationship dynamics, reported a happiness rate of 90.6% compared to only 57.4% for those with lower scores.
4. Decision-Making Factors: Among the factors that led to marriage, individuals who felt their partner shared similar values reported a happiness rate of 91.0%. In contrast, those who relied on practical traits, such as age and appearance, reported lower satisfaction at 81.0%.

Detailed Insights

Happiness Levels Not Divided by Demographics

A closer look at happiness rates revealed that they spanned from 73.7% among men in their 20s to 87.8% among women in their 20s. Notably, all demographic categories showed a happiness rate exceeding 70%, indicating that regardless of external factors, the majority of individuals reported satisfaction in their marriages.

Importance of Self-Awareness Pre-Marriage

The survey’s use of the Personal Dating Score demonstrated a strong link between an individual’s self-insight prior to marriage and their current happiness. Participants were sorted into low, medium, and high groups based on their scores with happiness rates showcasing a significant difference of 33.2 points between the high and low groups. Individuals with a strong foundation in understanding their values and relationship goals tend to experience a greater sense of happiness in marriage. The study emphasized that the ability to articulate one’s values and relationship aspirations could enhance marital satisfaction.

Decision Factors Impacting Happiness

When assessing what influences marital satisfaction, the data suggests that shared values, compatible conversation styles, and mutual support are crucial. Individuals who felt aligned with their partner in values exhibited a notably higher happiness rate. Alternatively, individuals numbering 12.7% reported unhappiness when their focus was primarily on support during tough times, contrary to those who prioritized communication and value alignment.

Conclusion

The findings of this research are eye-opening. A significant portion of married individuals (82.9%) expresses happiness, demonstrating that factors such as gender, age, or income do not heavily influence personal satisfaction. Instead, it highlights the critical role of self-understanding prior to marriage. Discerning one’s values and relationship aspirations emerges as a fundamental element to achieving a fulfilling and happy marital life.

While looking for partners, individuals are encouraged to reflect on their own desires and values rather than just seeking compatibility based on superficial factors. Support should be directed not just towards finding a partner but also toward fostering individual introspection and clarity about personal relationship goals.
