Ballard Power Systems Secures Significant Fuel Cell Engine Order for Bus Market Expansion

Ballard Power Systems Secures Significant Engine Order

In a notable development, Ballard Power Systems, a leader in fuel cell technology, has signed a multi-year supply agreement with Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles (MCV), one of the leading commercial vehicle manufacturers based in Egypt. This agreement involves the delivery of approximately 5 MW of fuel cell engines, a significant step towards enhancing sustainability in the public transportation sector.

The supply agreement encompasses 50 units of the FCmove®-HD+ hydrogen fuel cell engines, with an initial order consisting of 35 units. This marks a continuation of the growing relationship between Ballard and MCV, which began in 2022 when Ballard provided support for fuel cell engine integration. The very first fuel cell engine order was placed in 2023, highlighting the strengthening ties and mutual commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Deliveries for this substantial order are expected from 2025 to 2026 and will initially support various projects throughout the European Union, where there is increasing momentum in decarbonizing public transit solutions.

Oben Uluc, Vice President of Europe Sales and Marketing at Ballard, expressed enthusiasm regarding the agreement. He stated, “We are delighted with this order and the continued engagement with MCV. Our efforts in 2024 secured orders for 1,600 bus engines across seven different OEMs, and this new agreement propels our momentum into 2025.” According to Uluc, as the fuel cell bus market evolves and matures, they anticipate a growing deployment of Ballard’s fuel cells to facilitate global transit decarbonization.

Ballard currently powers over 1,800 fuel cell buses deployed worldwide. Collectively, these buses have traveled beyond 200 million miles, showcasing their reliability and efficiency in real-world applications. Ballard's fuel cell engines have exhibited a remarkable 99% availability rate, indicating their robust performance without safety incidents, providing a viable alternative to traditional diesel engines. Importantly, these advanced fuel cell systems transit without sacrificing service quality in terms of routes, capacity, availability, or refueling times — an essential aspect for public transport systems in densely populated urban areas.

The increasing adoption of zero-emission fuel cell technology reflects a broader trend within the transportation industry to seek out sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. As cities worldwide set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the demand for innovative energy solutions is paramount. Ballard Power Systems positions itself at the forefront of this movement, aiming to deliver advanced hydrogen fuel cell technologies that support the electrification of various modes of mobility, including buses, trucks, trains, and more.

In conclusion, this recent order from MCV signifies not just a victory for Ballard, but a crucial advancement in the quest for sustainable transportation solutions. As both Ballard Power Systems and MCV move forward with their partnership, their commitment to tackling climate change while reshaping the future of mobility becomes ever more apparent. The anticipated deployment of these fuel cell engines underscores the industry's pivot towards cleaner, more efficient alternatives to fossil-fueled transportation.
