Exploring the Promise and Challenges of Energy Storage Systems in Japan's Seventh Energy Basic Plan

Overview of the JPI Seminar on Energy Storage Systems

On May 12, 2025, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a significant seminar titled "The Expectations and Challenges of Energy Storage Systems in the Seventh Energy Basic Plan." This event will feature Dr. Tomohiko Iketani, a distinguished engineering doctor and special advisor from the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI).

Context of the Seminar

The Japanese government has set ambitious targets for CO2 reduction, aiming for a 46% decrease by 2030 and an even more challenging 73% by 2040 as part of the Seventh Energy Basic Plan. Achieving these goals necessitates the aggressive adoption of zero-emission energy sources such as renewable energy and nuclear power. While solar and wind energy are promising, their dependency on weather conditions makes them unstable. Nuclear energy, although reliable, currently can only operate at rated capacity with existing technology. Therefore, ensuring a balance between energy supply and demand is paramount, and energy storage technology plays a critical role in that.

Key Themes of the Seminar

During the session, Dr. Iketani will delve into the technical and institutional challenges facing energy storage systems, providing insights into their future prospects. Additionally, he will address public concerns surrounding the safety of lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in portable devices and have been linked to fire incidents. Understanding the safety issues associated with these batteries is paramount to gaining public trust in their application.

Seminar Topics

The discussion will encompass a variety of foundational topics, including:
1. Achieving a Carbon-Neutral Society
2. The Role of Energy Storage Systems in Power Supply
3. Expectations and Challenges of Energy Storage Systems
4. Insights on Lithium-Ion Batteries: Expectations and Challenges
5. Q&A Session
6. Networking Opportunity for Participants

This last component aims to facilitate interactions between attendees and the speaker, allowing for valuable networking that can support business development.

Participation Options

Attendees can choose from various participation methods, such as attending in person, watching the live stream, or accessing the archived session, which will be available for two weeks for on-demand viewing. The registration fee is set at JPY 37,620 (tax included) for individual participants, with a reduced rate of JPY 32,620 for additional attendees from the same organization. Notably, participants affiliated with local government bodies can register two individuals at a discounted rate of JPY 11,000 (tax included) for in-person or live stream attendance.

Post-Seminar Support

The JPI offers attendees the chance to ask questions to the speaker after the seminar as well as facilitate connections among participants. This initiative is designed to enhance networking opportunities and foster potential new business collaborations. Furthermore, the option to view the session archive will remain available for those who wish to revisit the content.
