Behind the Scenes of the Movie Industry: Debut Manga by Director Koizumi

Unveiling the Cinematic World with ‘Gokudo All Up!’

Norihiro Koizumi, the acclaimed director behind the beloved film series ‘Chihayafuru’, has taken a bold leap into the realm of manga with his debut work, titled ‘Gokudo All Up!’. This new series is a refreshing workplace comedy that aims to provide a unique perspective on the often unseen aspects of film production. The first volume is set to hit the shelves on December 23, 2023, and it features a striking cover inspired by retro Showa-era movie posters, inviting readers into the vibrant world of cinema.

In ‘Gokudo All Up!’, we find ourselves following the life of former gang member Katsuura Kujira, who has just returned to society after serving time for past mistakes. Kujira's love affair with cinema began when he watched the iconic romantic comedy ‘QUN♥Goku’, which left an indelible mark on his heart. The story takes a turn when he unexpectedly finds himself involved in the filming of a new movie. What starts as a mere favor to assist behind the scenes soon transforms into a crash course in the complexities and significance of film production. Kujira learns that even the smallest tasks, such as stopping pedestrians or ensuring a quiet set, play a crucial role in the filmmaking process.

Through a humorous lens, the manga highlights the ups and downs of being in the film industry. Kujira, with his gang background, might appear to be an unusual candidate for a job in this field, yet he discovers a deep passion for the behind-the-scenes work. The tasks he undertakes, such as simply plugging and unplugging electrical outlets, turn out to be more challenging than anticipated, demonstrating that the film industry is rife with hidden intricacies.

The manga doesn’t just entertain; it sheds light on the lesser-known truths of the film world that remain undiscovered by the general public. Through Kujira’s experiences, readers are taken on a journey filled with laughter and heartfelt moments, showcasing the true allure of working in film. With Koizumi’s insightful narrative, readers witness the journey from the struggles to the triumphs of the film crew, creating a bridge of understanding between the audience and the artists behind the camera.

Collaborating with Koizumi is Noriko Otani, who brings her own flavor to the storytelling. Otani is known for her successful work ‘Sukutte Goran’, which was adapted into a film in 2021, providing her with firsthand experience in the movie industry. Her ability to convey emotions through her art complements Koizumi’s storytelling, ensuring that readers will be captivated by every page.

‘Gokudo All Up!’ is not just for film enthusiasts; it’s also perfect for students pondering their career paths or anyone looking to explore an unfamiliar field. With its blend of comedy and heartfelt honesty, the manga resonates with a wide audience, inviting them to understand the hidden beauty within the labor that brings films to life. Whether you are a cinephile or simply curious about this creative industry, the first volume promises to be an engaging read.

The first volume of ‘Gokudo All Up!’ is set to become available at bookstores across the nation, alongside its digital version, on December 23. This intriguing debut by Koizumi is certainly one to watch for in the upcoming manga landscape!
