ZeroPoint Technologies and Seagate Showcase Innovations in Memory Compression at OCP Global Summit

ZeroPoint Technologies and Seagate Showcase Innovations in Memory Compression

This week, during the OCP Global Summit held in San Jose, California, ZeroPoint Technologies teamed up with Seagate Technology LLC to present a real-time demonstration of their cutting-edge hardware-accelerated memory compression technology. This collaboration is part of their contributions to the Open Compute Project’s (OCP) Composable Memory Systems TCO Sub-Team initiative, aiming to address critical needs posed by hyperscale workloads.

ZeroPoint and Seagate's demonstration unveiled the significant advantages provided by their memory compression technology within a CXL (Compute Express Link) memory tier. The initiative is designed to validate the remarkable benefits of cost, capacity, and performance associated with ZeroPoint's innovative solutions. As the demands of hyperscale architectures evolve, optimizing memory management becomes essential to remain competitive in the market.

A Paradigm Shift in Memory Optimization

Angelos Arelakis, Co-Founder and CTO of ZeroPoint Technologies, emphasizes that since early 2025, there has been a noticeable transformation in how partners and customers perceive hardware-accelerated memory optimization. Previously considered a supplementary feature, it is now recognized as a vital component in meeting Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) reduction goals set by hyperscalers.

The demonstration specifically highlighted several key benefits:
  • - Breakthrough Efficiency: Achieving up to 2.25× compression rates, with an average of 1.85× using cache-line compression technology, resulting in less than 1% CXL traffic. This performance aligns with operational metrics expected by hyperscale environments.
  • - No Performance Trade-offs: Latency-sensitive tasks can achieve SLA-level tail latency with over 90% page-cache hit rates.
  • - Significant Cost Savings: Users can expect a 44% reduction in TCO, particularly in dense deployments, aiding hyperscalers in reaching their adoption targets.

A Vision for Scalable Infrastructure

Arelakis further articulated the mission of the Open Compute Project. It aims to enhance the efficiency, openness, and cost-effectiveness of scalable infrastructure. He stated that inline compression in composable memory systems is crucial for realizing this vision. The showcase was characterized not as a vendor-focused solution but as a community-driven initiative, setting benchmarks for the next generation of memory architecture.

The necessity for compressed CXL memory tiers has already been recognized by the Open Compute community, reflected in their published specifications. This validation drives ZeroPoint towards demonstrating real-world applications, moving discussions from theoretical advantages to observable, measurable, and economic gains.

For those interested in witnessing this technology firsthand, the live demonstration is available at the OCP Global Summit from October 14-16 at the San Jose Convention Center's Innovation Village. Participants are encouraged to visit and learn more about the practical implications of these advancements.
