Motor City Ice: A $15M Investment in High-Tech Ice Production Creates 50 Jobs in Oak Park

Motor City Ice: Innovative Ice Manufacturing in Oak Park

In a significant development for the manufacturing and outdoor recreational industries, Motor City Ice has officially commenced operations at its new facility in Oak Park, Michigan. The initiative, backed by an investment exceeding $15 million made by three prominent families from the Metro Detroit area, aims to revolutionize ice production in the region. The company not only promises quality and efficiency but also contributes to local employment by creating 50 new job opportunities for residents.

The Transformation of a Community Space

Motor City Ice has repurposed a vast, 30,000-square-foot building previously used by Forgotten Harvest. This transformation into a fully automated ice production facility marks a crucial step in modernizing local manufacturing practices. Officially operational since October 19, 2026, the factory has an impressive initial production capacity of 150 tons of ice per day, with aspirations to double this output to 300 tons in the near future.

Key Players Behind the Initiative

The venture is spearheaded by the Loussia, Yaldo, and Kas-Marogi families, whose extensive backgrounds in grocery distribution, retail, and ice manufacturing underpin the new enterprise. The Loussia family operates Value Wholesale Distributors, a regional grocery wholesaler that has seen considerable growth since its founding in 1991, while the Yaldo family brings professional insights from their previous ownership of American Ice. The Kas-Marogi family has been a staple in Detroit's retail sector since 1979 through their business ventures.

Addressing Ice Demand with Innovative Technology

One of the standout features of Motor City Ice is its advanced distribution system designed to tackle ice shortages preemptively. By integrating sensor-enabled ice merchandisers with artificial intelligence-driven truck routing technology, the company actively monitors inventory levels at retail locations. These smart systems analyze sales trends, forecast demand, and streamline delivery schedules to ensure that retailers never run out of stock.

To enhance their logistics, Motor City Ice has invested in an impressive fleet of 11 delivery vehicles dedicated to serving grocery stores, gas stations, and other retailers in Southeast Michigan.

Quality Assurance Through Advanced Manufacturing

At the new Oak Park facility, Motor City Ice specializes in producing premium tube ice, available in 7-pound and 20-pound bags. Employing a sophisticated three-stage water filtration system coupled with ultraviolet (UV) sanitization guarantees the consistent quality of its ice production. Moreover, the company plans to expand its product range to include dry ice and is currently considering adding an in-house dry ice manufacturing section.

A Commitment to Local Economic Growth

By revitalizing a former industrial site, Motor City Ice has breathed new life into Oak Park, spearheading a new era of local manufacturing while also increasing employment opportunities in the community. Currently, the company serves counties including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb, with future growth targets set on Grand Rapids and regions beyond, such as Ohio.

In line with community values, Matthew Loussia, Co-Founder of Motor City Ice, emphasized the ideal balance of modern technology and traditional family-oriented service that the company embodies, stating, "We’re bringing modern technology to an old-school business without losing the personal service that makes a local, family-owned company special. We understand our market and prioritize customer needs, which is why we see great potential in the Metro Detroit area."

Conclusion

Motor City Ice stands as a testament to innovation in the manufacturing sector, showcasing how traditional industries can seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technology to meet growing consumer demands. As the company continues to expand and evolve, it remains firmly rooted in its commitment to serving the community while setting a new standard in the ice production industry.
