NAMM Foundation Celebrates 28 Years of Music Education Advocacy with 2027 Applications

NAMM Foundation Opens Applications for 2027 Best Communities for Music Education

The NAMM Foundation recently announced the opening of applications for the 2027 Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) Award, commemorating 28 years of ongoing commitment to music education advocacy. This significant initiative seeks to recognize and honor schools and districts across the United States that prioritize music education as an integral component of a well-rounded curriculum.

A Commitment to Music Education

Since its inception, the BCME has consistently spotlighted the crucial role that educators, school leaders, families, and community partners play in providing meaningful music education opportunities for students. By acknowledging these communities, the NAMM Foundation underlines the importance of sustained investment in music learning, inspiring other schools to enhance their music programs.

The new features for the 2027 BCME include the Dinah Gretsch Impact Award, which offers up to $5,000 each to as many as 10 schools and districts demonstrating financial need while showing a commitment to enhancing their music education offerings. This award honors Dinah Gretsch, reflecting her deep commitment to music education and belief in its transformative potential for every student.

Application Period and Recognition

Applications for the 2027 BCME program will remain open from October 20, 2026, until January 5, 2027. During this period, school districts and individual schools are encouraged to apply and showcase how they are fostering opportunities for students to learn, perform, create, and connect through music.

The program is designed to recognize districts that demonstrate prolonged commitment to music education through several factors:
  • - Investment in quality music programs
  • - Accessibility and participation
  • - Excellence in instruction
  • - Community engagement

From schools with longstanding music programs to first-time recipients making strides towards inclusivity, the BCME showcases the diverse ways music education enriches students' lives and contributes to their personal and academic growth.

Expanding Opportunities through Awards

The Dinah Gretsch Impact Award is a particularly notable addition for 2027. Title I schools, those serving disadvantaged students, as well as non-public schools showing financial need, are eligible to apply. This new dimension ensures that financial barriers do not inhibit schools from offering robust music education opportunities.

The NAMM Foundation has made tremendous strides since its founding, which stemmed from the National Association of Music Merchants' (NAMM) long-standing commitment to giving back to the music community. Over the years, it has invested more than $20 million to expand access to music education to people from all backgrounds.

In recognizing communities making music education a priority, the NAMM Foundation not only celebrates their efforts but encourages other school districts to invest in similar opportunities, fostering a future where music can flourish within education.
