North Carolina's Student Innovation Council Enhances Community College Experience for Future Generations

Student Innovation Council Established in North Carolina Community Colleges

On October 20, 2026, at Lenovo's Global headquarters in Morrisville, a pivotal initiative was set into motion as the North Carolina Community College System launched its Student Innovation Council. This council, consisting of ten students from various community colleges across North Carolina, aims to revolutionize the college experience by providing a platform for student voices.

The North Carolina Community College System, which oversees 58 community colleges serving around 600,000 students, has recognized a key gap—student involvement in the decision-making process. State Board Chair Tom Looney emphasized this need, stating, "I don't think we listen to students enough. Today, you, the students, are the most important people in the room." The importance of an immersive and seamless college experience is paramount, and this council is geared towards ensuring that students’ perspectives are prioritized in shaping educational frameworks.

The inaugural session was marked by collaborative efforts where council members meticulously mapped out the student journey. Their work entails delving into every aspect from initial inquiries about college to graduation and entering the workforce. With the intent to identify barriers in communication, coursework management, payment systems, and overall resource access, the Council is poised to advocate for substantial changes.

Gabriel Robertson, a council member from Johnston Community College, articulated his vision: "I hope that, even if I don't experience it myself, future students will reap the benefits of what we're doing today." This sentiment encapsulates the ethos of the council—investing in the future. The council's work entails gathering insights on various challenges students face and formulating actionable recommendations to improve systems and processes across these colleges.

Emphasizing the role of technology, the council aims to work closely with System leaders to enhance the digital infrastructure. Recommendations made by the council are expected to influence revisions in the system-wide learning management and customer relationship management platforms, ensuring technology is leveraged effectively to address the needs of students. As Vice President and Chief Experience Officer of Lenovo, Dilip Bhatia, noted during the session, engaging with users (in this case, students) can lead to more effective products and services. He remarked, "People don't buy products. They buy experiences," underscoring the importance of crafting positive educational experiences for prospective students.

Looking towards the future, Acting System President and CEO Dr. Monty Sullivan stressed the imperative of equal access for all students, irrespective of their geographic location. The System's ambitious goal is to eliminate disparities so that educational opportunities are uniformly available, regardless of a student's zip code.

The next steps for the Student Innovation Council involve consolidating their findings into practical measures that the North Carolina Community College System can adopt. The initiative represents a significant shift in educational governance, forging a closer connection between student insights and policy decisions affecting community colleges throughout the state.

As North Carolina's community colleges continue to evolve, the Student Innovation Council stands as a beacon of progress, championing the needs and concerns of students and ensuring their voices are heard. This remarkable collaboration signifies a forward-thinking approach to education, one that prioritizes student engagement as the cornerstone of meaningful reform. The council's work is not merely about immediate improvements; it’s an investment in a more inclusive, responsive, and effective education system for generations to come.
