Rivercrest School District Unveils Innovative Inclusive Playground for All Children

The Rivercrest School District, in collaboration with Cypress Creek Energy and other community partners, proudly inaugurated its new inclusive playground at Rivercrest Elementary School on October 29, 2026. This significant milestone was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, educators, families, and local partners, marking the launch of an innovative space dedicated to children of all abilities.

This $507,000 playground embodies the district's commitment to fostering a nurturing environment where every child can play, explore, and grow together. With features specifically designed for accessibility, the playground includes wheelchair-accessible equipment, sensory elements, reading areas, and swings suitable for students with varying mobility needs. Shantele Raper, the district superintendent, stated, "This playground started with a simple wish to give a student an opportunity to experience the joy of a swing. Our teachers saw what was possible, our students helped shape the vision, and our partners helped us bring it to life. Now we have a place where children of all abilities can play together, build friendships, and feel included. That means so much to our students and their families."

The inspiration for the playground originated during a field trip to another community. After witnessing the positive impacts of accessible playground equipment on a student with special needs, teachers and staff were motivated to create a similar facility for Rivercrest. The initial request for a single swing quickly evolved into a community effort to create a playground that caters to a broader range of abilities and interests.

Students played an instrumental role in shaping the design of the playground. The district conducted surveys among the student body, and selected representatives from each grade level acted as ambassadors to gather feedback and ideas. Their contributions led to a thoughtfully designed space that combines opportunities for physical activity, sensory exploration, and peaceful retreats.

Cypress Creek Energy made a generous contribution of $400,000 toward the construction of the playground, alongside support from Ag for Autism and additional funding from local and state sources. Kevin Smith, CEO of Cypress Creek Energy, emphasized the company's dedication to assisting in the realization of this vision. He remarked, "Rivercrest's teachers and students brought this playground to life with a clear vision for what every child should be able to experience. We're proud to help make that vision a reality. As we build the Steel River Energy Center, we have a responsibility to contribute to the community's future. Supporting its children and schools is one of the most meaningful ways we can do that."

The new playground not only provides a recreational space but also contributes significantly to Rivercrest's broader focus on the well-being of its students. The school district is also implementing safety measures, such as automated gates for school driveways, with assistance from Moss Construction and Cypress Creek Energy. This initiative highlights the strong partnership between local schools and Cypress Creek Energy, which is committed to making a positive impact in the community.

Rivercrest School District serves a wide area of approximately 400 square miles in Mississippi County, hosting more than 1,200 students from pre-K through graduation. The district combines academic excellence with extracurricular activities, such as athletics and band, allowing students to discover their interests and flourish. The inclusive playground stands as a testament to the district's dedication to fostering a welcoming environment where children and families can thrive together. With this new facility, Rivercrest enhances its mission of inclusion and community pride, providing more avenues for students to connect and engage in meaningful ways. The playground reflects the school district's values and commitment to creating spaces where every student—including those with different abilities—can belong and participate fully in the school community.
