University of Bridgeport's Counseling Program: A New Chapter of Accessibility and Growth
The University of Bridgeport (UB) is excited to announce significant developments in its master's program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling, marking a pivotal moment for both students and the community. Through a combination of a newly appointed leadership, innovative learning formats, and substantial funding, UB is committed to enhancing the future of mental health services.
New Leadership and Direction
At the forefront of this initiative is the appointment of Dr. Frederick Dombrowski as the new program director. Dr. Dombrowski brings a wealth of experience and passion for mental health education, aiming to expand the program's reach and effectiveness in training future counselors. His vision emphasizes increasing access to quality mental health resources in communities that need them most, particularly following the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
$2.4 Million Grant to Boost Access
The program’s expansion is bolstered by a generous $2.4 million grant awarded by the Health and Human Services Administration (HRSA). This funding will support the UB Multicultural Alliance (UBMA), an initiative aimed at strengthening Connecticut's counseling workforce. The program prioritizes the training of bilingual counselors and those from underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that the mental health services provided reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. This grant will support students financially during their clinical internships and facilitate advanced training in essential therapeutic techniques such as motivational interviewing and dialectical behavioral therapy.
“Through this grant, we are not only enhancing the quality of mental health care available but also addressing the urgent needs of our communities,” Dr. Dombrowski stated. “We are equipping our students with effective treatment methods and supporting their financial needs, thereby responding to the heightened mental health crisis.”
Expanding Learning Formats
Recognizing the diverse needs of students, the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program now offers three accessible formats: on-campus, synchronous online, and asynchronous online. This flexibility allows students to manage their educational pursuits alongside work and personal obligations, making it easier to complete their degree.
“Whether choosing the convenience of asynchronous classes or the engagement of live online sessions, students will receive the same rigorous training and personalized support that is synonymous with UB's teaching philosophy,” Dr. Dombrowski added.
Comprehensive Training for Future Counselors
The 60-credit master's program at UB is designed to prepare graduates for licensure as professional counselors, capable of operating in various clinical settings. Students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through internships in local mental health and substance use clinics, applying their acquired skills in practical environments.
As the program evolves, UB remains dedicated to fostering academic excellence and professional responsibility. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program aims to empower the next generation of counselors, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the mental health needs of society today and in the future.
