Connecting Children Through Nature: The 'Symbol Tree' Project in Nagano and Tokyo

Connecting Children Through Nature: The 'Symbol Tree' Project

The recent unveiling of the ‘Symbol Tree’ in TENOHA, a beauty-rich retreat in Nagano Prefecture, has signified a precious bond between children from Chino City and Tokyo. The initiative, organized by CHEERS Inc. in collaboration with Tokyu Land Corporation and the Chino City Regional Creation Division, aims to foster connections through nature and art. It embodies a meaningful narrative encapsulated in vibrant, nature-themed artworks created by over 800 children.

Background of the Initiative

The ‘Symbol Tree’ project began with an intention to create connections and nurture the understanding of nature among children living in Chino and those from Tokyo. This artistic endeavor is built upon the theme of “Sense of Wonder,” aiming to promote a deeper appreciation of the environment and a sense of community. It serves as a testament to the beauty of collaboration and creativity amongst young minds.

The Concept of the Symbol Tree

The Symbol Tree itself is constructed from thinning lumber of the karamatsu tree, an emblematic species of Chino. This tree is adorned with colorful art pieces crafted by children from both regions, each depicting their feelings and thoughts about nature, freedom, and sustainable futures. The artworks, painted on strips of wood, blend together into a singular, magnificent tree, representing the harmony of diverse expressions and individuality.

Crafting the Symbol Tree

  • - January 2025: Workshops with Local Children
In January, 551 children from Chino participated in workshops where they were encouraged to express feelings of joy and excitement through art on the karamatsu strips. This creative initiative included children from 14 out of the 19 kindergartens within Chino City’s jurisdiction.

  • - February 2025: Sustainable Workshops for Tokyo Children
In February, 273 children from the Tokyo metropolitan area gathered at TENOHA Daikanyama to engage in sustainable workshops celebrating the natural beauty and local specialties of Chino. They also painted on the karamatsu strips, collaborating with their peers from Nagano. This event showcased crafting experiences using twigs and pine cones and flower-picking activities featuring regional flora, all of which combined creative interaction between children from different backgrounds.

  • - July 2, 2025: The Unveiling Ceremony
Finally, the unveiling ceremony for the Symbol Tree was held on July 2nd, 2025. At TENOHA Chino, children’s artwork from both regions came together into a singular, symbolic tree. Vibrant colors and unique patterns came together, creating a symbol of unity reflecting the essence of these collaborative young artists. The Symbol Tree is set to be exhibited at TENOHA for an extended period, allowing visitors to appreciate this unique art project for some time to come.

Sustainable Practices Adopted

In an effort to uphold and preserve Nagano’s lush environment for future generations, the project utilizes sustainable practices. The karamatsu wood used for the project underscores effective waste reduction methods. Moreover, the eco-friendly art supplies employed, known as “Kitpas,” are made from rice wax, making them safe and sustainable for children to use in their creative processes. These supplies emphasize the project's commitment to the environment and children’s safety.
