A Unique Community Project Celebrating 50 Years of Memories
Odakyu Department Store in Machida has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary on September 23rd. In honor of this occasion, the store is introducing a creative initiative called the "Time Capsule Project". This project is designed by the store’s young employees in collaboration with students from the Machida Design & Architecture Vocational School. Together, they have developed seven distinct messages that reflect the essence of the store across different floors, aiming to visually express heartfelt memories associated with the shopping experience.
The involvement of young employees is vital; they were primarily responsible for conceptualizing and overseeing the project. This endeavor serves as a gesture of gratitude to the loyal customers who have frequented the store over the years, while also aiming to enrich the local community's anniversary celebrations.
Highlights of the Project
The visual representations created by the students are inspired by real-life memories shared by both employees and customers. They honed in on a variety of poignant messages that encapsulate memorable moments, such as:
- - “The weight in my hand holds family joy and delicious treats.”
- - “My first foray into luxury cosmetics was a slightly daring afternoon.”
- - “Selecting the perfect handbag, sending cheers deep from my heart.”
- - “Embracing new clothing and colors infused my life with vibrancy.”
- - “The tie chosen together still watches over my journey.”
- - “Warm memories connected to the pearls gifted by my grandmother.”
- - “The essential dinnerware I picked here adds charm to family moments.”
Each of these messages serves as a foundation for artistic expressions by the participating students. Their unique perspectives and creativity bring forth the essence of personal experiences associated with shopping at the department store.
This project is not merely an artistic endeavor but also a collaboration between the local educational institutions and the department store, providing students with a platform to showcase their work to a broader audience while generating a meaningful connection between the local community, the department store, and its customers.
Selection of Outstanding Works
On August 7, a selection meeting was held at the Machida Design & Architecture Vocational School, where faculty members and Odakyu representatives evaluated the artistic submissions. Out of 19 contributions, seven artworks were selected based on criteria including expressiveness regarding the theme 'Moments in Time', relevance to the different floors, relatability, and potential for commercialization. Three top awards and four excellence awards were given, highlighting the creativity of the participants.
These selected pieces will be showcased as promotional visuals for the anniversary celebration, titled "Great Birth Festival," beginning on September 2. The three best pieces will be displayed on digital signage located in the second-floor concourse and as part of the visual presentation throughout the store, while the entire award-winning collection will also be featured on flags and posters within the venue.
Looking Towards the Future
The "Time Capsule Project" stands as a testament to the ongoing dedication of young employees to create lasting memories and meaningful connections within the community. As Odakyu Department Store Machida celebrates 50 years, it emphasizes appreciation for the support received over the decades while looking forward to nurturing relationships that will last for another 50 years.
The store encourages everyone to visit and reflect on their own ``moments in time`` as they explore the beautiful artwork created by talented local students.
