Kentucky American Water Expands Footprint with Black Mountain Utility Acquisition

Kentucky American Water Expands with Black Mountain Acquisition

Kentucky American Water has made significant strides in enhancing its operations by completing the acquisition of the Black Mountain Utility District's water system and wastewater service. For $1.4 million, the utility will incorporate over 4,300 water connections and six wastewater connections in Harlan County. This strategic acquisition, approved by the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC), underscores Kentucky American Water's ongoing mission to bolster water infrastructure and service delivery throughout the region.

Commitment to Infrastructure Upgrades

The acquisition aligns with Kentucky American Water’s long-term investment strategy, with plans to inject over $20.9 million into the existing infrastructure over the next five years. Key upgrades include:
  • - Water meter replacements within the first year.
  • - Enhanced safety and security measures.
  • - Improvements to pump stations and control systems.

These enhancements are designed to provide a reliable and efficient water service to the customers of the newly acquired district.

Local Community Support

The acquisition action was complemented by the utility’s recent involvement in local disaster recovery efforts. Following severe flooding in Harlan County, Kentucky American Water collaborated with Black Mountain Utility District and local emergency management agencies to restore water service to approximately 200 homes. This hands-on approach not only highlights their commitment to community welfare but also builds trust among residents.

“We understand that reliable water service is critical to daily life,” said Dan Mosley, Harlan County Judge Executive. “Black Mountain Utility District customers have faced numerous challenges in recent years. The acquisition and planned investments will considerably enhance their experience.” Furthermore, the company has incorporated 10 employees from the previous management team, ensuring a seamless transition for the more than 4,300 customers.

Focus on Customer Experience

Kentucky American Water is dedicated to delivering high-quality customer service. New customers will soon receive instructional materials via mail to facilitate a smooth transition. Additionally, a dedicated webpage has been launched, providing relevant information regarding customer service and billing protocols. The utilities will also offer enhanced services through the MyWater online account management portal and various bill payment options.

Rob Burton, president of Kentucky American Water, emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, “Our objective is to deliver safe, clean, and reliable water services to our new customers in Harlan County, similar to how we serve our existing 550,000 customers across the Commonwealth.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Kentucky American Water's acquisition of the Black Mountain Utility District is a pivotal step towards improved water service reliability and infrastructure. As they embark on this new chapter, the company looks forward to being a proactive partner in the community, ensuring sustainable and high-quality water service for years to come.
