Travel Trends for Summer 2025

In a comprehensive study conducted by HIS (H.I.S. Co., Ltd.) based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, the booking trends for summer travel during the period of July 19 to August 31, 2025, have been outlined, showing a significant increase in both overseas and domestic travel. The survey, conducted on June 23, 2025, focused on travel bookings made through HIS, including tours, dynamic packages, and flight tickets, excluding accommodation-only bookings.

Summary of Findings

1. International Travel: The number of travelers booking overseas trips increased by 8.2% compared to the previous year, with an average spending amounting to ¥204,300, up 7.0% year-on-year.
2. Domestic Travel: Domestic bookings also saw a 7.6% rise when compared to the same period last year, with an average expenditure of ¥95,000, reflecting a 4.1% increase.
3. Top Travel Dates: For overseas travel, August 9 (Saturday) is the most popular departure date, while domestically, July 27 (Sunday) leads.

International Travel Insights

The increase in overseas travel bookings has reached an impressive 108.2%, with flight bookings representing 59.0% of total bookings, slightly down from the previous year, while tour packages increased by 1.7 percentage points to 41.0%. The most significant peak for reservations this summer occurred in May, accounting for 32.7% of total bookings, further increasing the trend of early reservation patterns. Average expenditures for international trips witnessed a rise, with a notable surge in long-distance destinations; for instance, Europe saw a 17.4% year-on-year increase, and the Middle East recorded a staggering 36.2% rise.

The most favored travel dates remain weekends preceding the Obon holiday, particularly August 9 and 10, which are projected to be the peak days for departures. Family vacations are prevalent, accounting for 44.9% of the customer demographic, with couples representing 19.5%.

Popular destinations for international travel remain steady with Seoul, Taipei, and Honolulu consistently leading the pack. Honolulu noted a remarkable increase of 20.3% compared to last year. This surge is attributed to a favorable exchange rate, which stabilized at around 144 yen to the dollar compared to last year's 156-157 yen, in addition to enhanced flight services by ANA and JAL increasing capacity to major routes. Guam has risen to 6th place thanks to the resumption of flights by T'way Airlines from Kansai starting July, witnessing an astounding increase in bookings of 208.2%. Furthermore, Da Nang is generating interest with increased flight options from multiple domestic airports due to VietJet Air's charter services during the Obon season.

As for the year-on-year growth rate of bookings, Shanghai stands out with a staggering increase of 249.2% due to visa exemptions. Paris, benefiting from last year's Olympics and Paralympics, is following close behind. The historical sites in Cairo are attracting travelers, influenced by the anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, while Barcelona remains notable for its unfinished yet iconic Sagrada Familia, drawing attention ahead of its expected completion in 2026.

Domestic Travel Trends

On the domestic front, bookings have also increased by 7.6% year-on-year, with May being the most popular month for bookings at 38.5%. Unlike previous years, where June recorded the highest percentage, data indicates a shift in early bookings akin to international travel trends. The average spending for domestic trips witnessed an uptick to ¥95,000, influenced by rising airline prices, particularly in Okinawa where average costs reached ¥107,800, reflecting a 5% increase.

The most preferred domestic travel date this year is July 27 (Sunday). Contrasting the trends seen in international travel, demand is higher for weekdays excluding the Obon period, particularly for departures on Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.

Okinawa stands out as the leading domestic destination, showcasing a growth of 10.7%. The planned opening of a major theme park in late July is generating excitement among potential travelers. Osaka also saw spectacular growth at 192.9% due to the ongoing World Expo, with many visitors interested in the themed hotel experiences related to the expo. Lastly, Shimane Prefecture attracted travelers interested in Izumo Taisha and Tamatsukuri Onsen, presenting a competitive price point of ¥51,900, making it an attractive option compared to others.
