Japan Retains Its Popularity as Top Travel Destination in Asia-Pacific According to Visa Survey

Japan Remains the Most Desired Travel Destination in Asia-Pacific

A recent survey by Visa titled "Global Travel Intentions 2026" shows that Japan continues to be the most sought-after travel destination in the Asia-Pacific region. Conducted with over 47,000 respondents globally, including 1,024 from Japan, the report highlights that Japanese travelers exhibit a careful approach to travel planning while increasingly utilizing AI.

Japanese Travelers Prioritize Short-Distance Trips

In light of rising prices and global uncertainties, about 67% of Japanese respondents traveled within the Asia-Pacific region in the last 12 months, significantly more than the 16% who opted for Europe and 13% for North America. Among these travelers, Korea emerged as the top destination at 21%, followed by Taiwan at 17%, the United States at 12%, Australia at 9%, and Hong Kong at 4%. For the upcoming year, 26% of travelers plan to visit Korea again, with Taiwan, the US, Australia, and Hong Kong following closely.

Interestingly, about 21% of respondents identified Japan as their primary travel destination in the past year. Looking ahead, 28% indicated their desire to travel to Japan over the next 12 months, reinforcing Japan's status as a premier travel choice in the Asia-Pacific region.

Utilizing AI for Informed Travel Planning

Japanese travelers are embracing a more strategic approach to travel planning. The survey reveals that they are not only focusing on basic elements such as accommodations but are also actively seeking current information about their destinations. AI has become a vital tool in this process, with 39% of respondents using AI to explore travel ideas, and 30% using it to search for local tours and experiences.

Payment Methods and Safety Are Crucial

One of the key considerations before traveling is the method of payment. The survey indicates that 49% of respondents prioritize having access to credit card facilities at their destinations, followed closely by 33% who consider payment safety as vital. These figures are significantly higher than the overall percentages in the Asia-Pacific region, where only 27% prioritize card accessibility. This highlights the importance of a reliable payment environment for ensuring smooth travel arrangements.

Balancing Pre-Planning with Flexibility

While Japanese travelers are adopting a more organized approach to their travel plans, they are also leaving room for flexibility. Approximately 88% reported reserving accommodations in advance, while around 60% booked experiences and activities beforehand. However, many decisions regarding dining (73%) and transportation (64%) are made upon arrival, suggesting a blend of careful preparation and adaptability.

Visa is dedicated to providing safe and convenient payment experiences, enabling travelers to confidently plan their journeys and enjoy their travels.

The survey was conducted online with more than 47,000 participants globally, including over 17,000 from the Asia-Pacific region, and 1,024 respondents from Japan. The data collection took place between January and February 2026.
