Project Volume Up: Empowering Libraries with Hotspot Lending
In a groundbreaking initiative to combat the digital divide,
Mission Telecom, a nonprofit telecommunications provider, has launched
Project Volume Up. This project aims to support public libraries across the United States to either start or enhance their hotspot lending programs. With the increasing importance of internet access in today’s world, this initiative is crucial for communities lacking reliable connectivity.
Before Project Volume Up, many libraries struggled to offer hotspot services after the elimination of funding from the FCC's E-rate program in October. Mark Colwell, the Executive Director at Mission Telecom, emphasized the role libraries play in local communities. They serve not only as community Wi-Fi hubs but also as vital access points for telehealth services. Colwell stated, "Libraries are on the front lines of digital access in every community across the country. Project Volume Up is designed to make it as affordable as possible for libraries to do this work."
Details of Project Volume Up
Project Volume Up’s approach combines essential resources such as hardware solutions, nationwide 4G and 5G network coverage, and nonprofit pricing. Libraries can choose from two primary options to participate in the program:
1.
Switch & Save: This option allows libraries to keep their existing devices while simply switching their SIM cards to Mission Telecom. This ensures immediate savings, eliminating the need for new equipment.
2.
Launch for Access: This package equips libraries with everything they need to start a hotspot lending program. It includes two Franklin T10 4G hotspots, two additional donated devices, four lines of unlimited service for 12 months, and dedicated account support.
The initiative, powered by one of the largest and most advanced 5G networks in the country, focuses on delivering reliable connectivity, especially in rural areas where internet access has historically been challenging. By using low-cost devices, Mission Telecom ensures that libraries can maximize their budgets while providing necessary services to their communities.
How to Participate
Libraries interested in joining Project Volume Up can request a connectivity review from Mission Telecom, with a deadline for applications set for July 31. This program not only addresses the immediate needs of digital access but also contributes to the overall goal of expanding digital equity. Mission Telecom’s commitment to bridging the digital divide signifies a tremendous step forward in ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to connect, learn, and succeed in the digital era.
