European Coalition for Circular Textiles Advocates for Waste-Free Economy

On October 15, 2025, in Paris, the European Circular Textile Coalition, led by Reju and eleven other companies, launched a manifesto that calls for a fully circular textile economy. This coalition aims to influence the European Union to transform textile waste from expired products into a driver for green jobs, innovation, and competitiveness.

The statistics are alarming: Europe generates 12.6 million tons of textile waste annually, most of which ends up in landfills, incinerators, or is exported abroad, with only 1% recycled back into new garments. The coalition emphasizes that this situation is no longer tenable. In their manifesto, they state, "We refuse to accept textile waste as an inevitable condition; instead, we see it as a solvable challenge facing our generation."

The coalition is urging urgent actions from the EU to pair regulatory ambitions with investments in recycling and production systems. They highlight that "Without a prepared system, even the most advanced regulations can fail. We are here to help bridge that gap." The manifesto lays out three key policy pillars that could support meaningful change:
1. Ensure a competitive European textile supply chain by relocating production back to Europe, thereby adhering to environmental and labor standards.
2. Prioritize high-quality textile recycling so that post-consumer textile waste becomes a primary raw material for new textiles.
3. Establish a mandatory share of recycled materials in textiles, implementing ambitious yet realistic targets gradually.

Patrik Frisk, CEO of Reju, emphasized the need for systemic change through collaboration: “This coalition is important because it allows the entire industry to pull together in one direction. We invite other companies to join us. Voluntary initiatives have proven entirely insufficient. We need binding standards that will support the demand for recycled materials.”

The coalition is launching a promotional tour to engage policymakers and invites further stakeholders from the entire textile value chain to join their common effort. “Now is the time to act because if a waste-free world is possible, we cannot afford to wait!”
