Leadership Transition at ACMG

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) has announced a significant leadership change with Melanie J. Wells, MPH, CAE, stepping down as Chief Executive Officer. This transition will take effect on November 21, 2025. Wells has been at the forefront of ACMG since 2016, holding various leadership positions including Chief Operating Officer and most recently, CEO. Her tenure has been marked by transformative changes that have stabilized and strengthened the organizations she led.

A Legacy of Accomplishments

During her time as CEO, Wells has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing both the ACMG and its philanthropic arm, the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine (ACMGF). Among her key achievements is the development and implementation of the strategic plans for 2025–2029 for both organizations. This comprehensive approach focused on aligning the mission and measurable goals, which is instrumental in setting the stage for the future.

In her efforts to increase the organizations' impact, Wells expanded the governance and development capacities. Significant milestones include filling essential positions on the Foundation Board and securing the largest single philanthropic gift in ACMGF's history. Such achievements have not only bolstered the organization’s financial health but have also empowered it to increase its outreach efforts exponentially.

Another notable advancement under Wells’ leadership is the emphasis on diversity and visibility within the workforce. The implementation of initiatives like the E3 Genomics Pathways Program has been critical in nurturing the next generation of leaders in the fields of genetics and genomics.

The leadership change has been met with appreciation from the organization's board members. ACMG President Mira Irons, MD, FACMG, acknowledged the impressive progress during Wells' term. "Melanie has led ACMG and ACMGF through a period of remarkable growth. Her strategic vision and dedication have provided a strong foundation for the future," Irons commented.

Nancy Mendelson, MD, FACMG, president of ACMGF, highlighted the vital role Wells played in connecting the College and the Foundation, fortifying their capabilities to support education, innovation, and philanthropic efforts in medical genetics.

As ACMG prepares for this transition, an interim CEO will be appointed to ensure continuity. This move aims to maintain the momentum Wells has created while effectively managing the subsequent phases of leadership change.
