Dive into the Depths: 'Deep-Sea Wonders 2026' at Sunshine Aquarium
The Sunshine Aquarium located in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, is hosting an exciting event titled
'Deep-Sea Wonders 2026 - A Journey So Far', which runs until May 10, 2026. This event is designed to unravel the mysteries surrounding deep-sea life, including the latest captivating addition to their exhibition: the Mentaco, or the
dumbo octopus.
On March 17, during a deep-sea expedition, the aquarium successfully collected several live Mentaco specimens, which have been on display to the public since March 18. This unusual octopus, named for its ear-like fins and soft, round body that resembles a UFO, is often referred to as the ‘deep-sea idol.’ However, many aspects of its life and behavior remain a mystery. This event offers a rare opportunity for visitors to observe these fascinating creatures in person.
About the Mentaco
The Mentaco is typically found in habitats ranging from Sagami Bay to the East China Sea, dwelling at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters. It measures approximately 20 centimeters in size, characterized by its unique floppy fins that resemble ears and membrane-like extensions between its arms. Different from other octopus species, Mentacos have their suckers lined in a single row, and they lack an ink sac, which means they cannot eject ink when threatened.
Conducted by a dedicated team, a deep-sea bottom trawl fishing operation was undertaken in Suruga Bay, Shizuoka, to capture live Mentaco specimens. Highlighting the sensitive nature of these creatures, aquarists were careful during their transport to ensure they didn’t suffer injuries or stress due to the deep-sea conditions. The aquarium staff is now focused on observing the living behaviors of these fascinating deep-sea dwellers to gain insights into their ecology.
The aquarium aims to provide a long-term showcase of these unique characteristics, inviting all to join in this once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet the Mentaco and other deep-sea life.
