Upcoming Online Seminar: National Integration and Finance by the National Government
On September 24, 2025, Okayama University will host the 48th monthly research seminar organized by the Research Institute for Civilizational Dynamics (RIDC). This particularly focuses on the influence of the national government on state integration and finance during the early 20th century in China. The seminar welcomes anyone interested in the topic to participate online.
About the Seminar
The Research Institute for Civilizational Dynamics, which was inaugurated in 2021, aims to promote collaborative educational and creation activities within the framework of 'Okayama University as a distinctive research university'. This marks the first humanities and social sciences-related institute at Okayama University, encouraging researchers to share their findings and discuss ongoing projects. The seminars can be either open to the public or semi-closed, depending on the topic and audience involvement.
The upcoming seminar will take place online from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM (JST) via Zoom. The topic will be "National Integration and Finance by the National Government," presented by Associate Professor Junpei Sato from the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences at Okayama University.
Speaker Overview
Professor Sato's research delves into the financial history of China in the early 20th century, a period marked by complex interrelationships between central and local governments. This seminar will challenge prevailing narratives that focus solely on the strong financial bases of provinces while exploring the implications of political decentralization and the struggles of weaker provinces facing financial challenges. Specifically, the analysis will cover the state of local finances and military expenses during the Northern Expedition from 1926 to 1928, shedding light on the factors that influenced the national government's push for integration amidst financial turmoil.
