BAE Systems Secures Contract to Enhance KF-21 Fighter with New IFF Technology
BAE Systems Secures Contract to Enhance KF-21 Fighter with New IFF Technology
In a significant move for defense technology, BAE Systems has announced a groundbreaking contract with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) worth $11 million. The collaboration aims to integrate the AN/APX-127(V)1 Combined Interrogator Transponder (CIT) system into the KF-21 Boramae fighter aircraft. This new Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) technology is set to provide enhanced decision-making capabilities, allowing pilots to effectively analyze situations and distinguish between friendly forces and potential threats in complex operational environments.
Enhanced Capabilities of the AN/APX-127(V)1 CIT
The AN/APX-127(V)1 CIT is designed specifically for tactical aircraft, ensuring both versatility and adaptability for current and future mission requirements. Its open-system architecture demonstrates a commitment to innovation, enabling software upgrades that mitigate the risks and costs typically associated with hardware modifications. This advanced system not only supports the latest cryptographic standards but also incorporates robust anti-jamming features and cybersecurity measures, marking it as a state-of-the-art solution for modern air combat.
Seth Guanu, the Combat Identification Products program area director at BAE Systems, emphasized the importance of this system, stating, "The APX-127 Combined Interrogator Transponder will equip the KF-21 aircraft with state-of-the-art IFF to help bolster the Republic of Korea's national defense strategy." By equipping fifth-generation fighter pilots with this technology, the KF-21 will gain a competitive edge in air superiority missions, enhancing interoperability with U.S. and coalition forces.
Compatibility and Upgrades
One of the standout features of the AN/APX-127(V)1 is its compatibility with existing systems; it serves as a drop-in replacement for the earlier AN/APX-126(V) CIT currently used on the KF-21. With Mark XIIB IFF certification alongside Mode S and Mode 5 capabilities, this upgrade allows for secure and encrypted data communication. Warfighters will benefit from improved situational awareness due to additional receive channels that facilitate the passive acquisition of signals, further enhancing their ability to detect and identify friendly aircraft amidst the complexities of dynamic combat environments.
With extensive experience in the field—over 80 years—BAE Systems boasts an impressive track record of delivering critical interrogator and transponder systems, having supplied more than 1,500 interrogators, 6,000 combined interrogator transponder systems, and 16,000 individual transponders. The company’s IFF solutions cater to all military branches, supporting operations related to air defense, weaponry, air traffic control, and instrumentation in diverse operational contexts.
Looking Forward
Under this newly awarded contract, development efforts for the AN/APX-127(V)1 CIT will take place at BAE Systems' facilities in Greenlawn, New York and Austin, Texas. The KF-21 CIT units are projected to be delivered to KAI, allowing for their integration and certification in 2026, further strengthening the Republic of Korea's defense infrastructure.
As the demands of modern warfare evolve, BAE Systems continues to stay at the forefront by providing cutting-edge technologies, reinforcing the strategic partnerships that enhance both national and allied defense capabilities. This contract illustrates a collective commitment to ensuring that the KF-21, a pivotal asset for the South Korean Air Force, is equipped with the best available technology to face 21st-century challenges head-on.
