Zoomcar Makes Significant Progress Towards Adjusted EBITDA Breakeven in Recent Financial Reports

Zoomcar's Journey Towards Profitability

In a remarkable turnaround, Zoomcar Holdings, Inc., the largest peer-to-peer self-drive car-sharing platform in India, has outlined substantial structural changes aimed at reaching adjusted EBITDA breakeven. The latest report covering the fiscal first quarter, which concluded on June 30, 2026, illustrates a positive trajectory for the company.

Over the past year, Zoomcar has seen a significant increase in its quarterly contribution profit, which grew by about $0.51 million. This came alongside a reduction in operating costs, which saw a decrease of about $0.62 million. The cumulative effect of these changes points to an impressive swing of around $1.13 million in profit over the last twelve months. Importantly, the remaining gap to breakeven is now smaller than the progress already made since June 2025, indicating a potential path forward that looks increasingly favorable.

Positive Growth Metrics

Zoomcar's contribution profit surged to a record $1.65 million, marking a 45% increase compared to the previous year, driven by net revenue of $2.35 million. Notably, the contribution margin reached 70% of net revenue—a significant leap from 49%—indicating improved efficiency. Furthermore, contribution profit per booking also increased markedly by 72%, reaching $18.75, bolstered by a total of 88,160 bookings.

The operating costs, crucially, fell 21% from the previous year, bringing them down to approximately $2.26 million. This means that contribution profit now funds about 73% of the operational costs, a notable improvement from just 40% a year ago. The persistent loss from operations, which is the most comparable GAAP measure, saw a significant reduction of 50%, dropping from $1.76 million to $0.88 million.

Durable Margin Growth

According to CFO Sachin Gupta, the journey to breakeven is not merely an event but a distance that is actively closing. He emphasized that the two primary factors impacting profitability—what each booking earns and the associated operational costs—are both moving positively. This margin expansion has been achieved without significant discounting, reinforcing the notion that the growth is sustainable and structurally based.

The cost of revenue has decreased by 38%, down to $0.81 million, primarily due to improved loss prevention measures and changes to insurance coverage that have reduced losses from theft and damage. The gross margin climbed to 65%, highlighting the efficiency gains being realized.

A Strong Demand and Repeat User Base

Another indicator of Zoomcar's success is the increasing quality of demand. The number of repeat users has risen to 58% of total bookings, demonstrating strong consumer loyalty. The average trip rating from guests also notably increased to 4.8 out of 5, emphasizing a positive user experience that continues to pull customers back to the platform. This growth in repeat usage has allowed Zoomcar to lower customer acquisition costs while simultaneously increasing revenue.

Guidance for the Future

On the operational front, Zoomcar is deliberately pivoting its bookings strategy to focus more on longer, higher-value trips rather than shorter ones, which is evident in the 16% decrease in the number of bookings but a 7% increase in value per booking to approximately $66.

An asset-light model means that Zoomcar’s growth is facilitated without heavy capital expenditures. As such, the company continues to expand its presence across 109 cities with more than 2 million unique customers. An exciting development is the pilot introduction of a two-wheeler category in Bengaluru, which utilizes the existing infrastructure and allows for immediate margin gains due to established operational techniques.

Conclusion

Ultimately, Zoomcar's consistent ability to deliver positive contributions over eleven consecutive quarters, along with a lower cost base, paints a promising picture for the future. With the Indian self-drive rental market still significantly underdeveloped, the potential for scaling operations with innovative approaches is significant. As Zoomcar considers growth capital to drive further profitability, the company is well-positioned for the next phase of its expansion, driven by its commitment to sustainable profitability and operational excellence.
