METLEN and PETRONAS Sign Long-Term LNG Supply Agreement in Southeast Europe

METLEN and PETRONAS Unite for a New Energy Era in Southeast Europe

In a strategic move to bolster energy security and diversification in Southeast Europe, METLEN and PETRONAS have announced a significant long-term agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This partnership follows the signing of a sales and purchase agreement (SPA) through PETRONAS's subsidiary, PETCO Trading (UK) Limited (PTUK), marking a pivotal step in enhancing the region's energy infrastructure.

The Agreement Details

Under the terms of the signed SPA, PETCO Trading (UK) Limited will deliver six LNG cargoes annually, totaling approximately 600 million cubic meters (bcma) each year over the next five years starting in 2027. This supply will come from PETRONAS's Atlantic portfolio and is expected to significantly improve the energy supply spectrum in Greece and surrounding areas.

Strategic Implications

This deal is a substantial part of METLEN's energy strategy to diversify its LNG supply sources, thereby enhancing flexibility and resiliency in procurement. Such an initiative will not only benefit METLEN but also contribute to the stability of supply within Greece and across Southeast Europe, positioning Greece as a strategic regional energy hub.

“By integrating our energy activities and leveraging our comprehensive presence across the gas value chain, METLEN is committed to promoting market liquidity and efficient energy supply,” said Panayotis Kanellopoulos, Executive Director of International Energy Supply and Trading at METLEN. This agreement underscores the importance of collaboration within the energy sector, especially as the markets navigate through dynamic transitions related to security, affordability, and sustainability.

Additionally, PETRONAS's Datuk Adif Zulkifli, Executive Vice President and CEO of Gas and Maritime Business, emphasized the company's commitment to providing reliable and flexible LNG solutions tailored to their clients' evolving energy needs. "As energy markets transform, PETRONAS strives to create value through its global LNG portfolio and commercial capabilities while reinforcing key relationships in growth markets like Europe and the Mediterranean region,” he commented.

A Stronger Future Ahead

With both METLEN and PETRONAS working hand-in-hand, this agreement lays a foundation for greater energy supply diversification and resilience, ultimately supporting the changing energy demands of Greece and the broader Southeast European region. This alliance not only strengthens existing relations but also sets the groundwork for future opportunities and collaboration between the two companies.
