The 38th Edokiriko New Works Exhibition Shines a Light on Craftsmanship and Diversity

The 38th Edokiriko New Works Exhibition: Craftsmanship and Challenges in Focus

The 38th Edokiriko New Works Exhibition, organized by the Edokiriko Cooperative Association, is currently taking place at GinzaNovo (formerly Tokyu Plaza Ginza) from April 3 through April 5. This exhibition serves as both a competition showcasing the skill and design of Edokiriko artisans and as a platform for nurturing young talent, thereby ensuring the tradition of this exquisite glasswork continues to thrive.

A Celebration of Traditional Craftsmanship

This event was initiated in 1989 following the recognition of Edokiriko as a traditional craft by the Tokyo metropolitan government. The exhibition provides artisans with an opportunity to showcase their creativity and hone their skills. In light of changing lifestyles and market conditions, many artisans have faced challenges; they can no longer survive merely as subcontractors providing skill. This exhibition stands as a significant point of connection between artisans and consumers, allowing them to engage directly with the products, thus promoting sustainability in this traditional craft.

Notably, visitors can capture the brilliance of Edokiriko glass through photography (for non-commercial use), giving them a chance to appreciate the intricate cuts and shimmering beauty of the glass from their own perspective.

Highlights of This Year's Awards

Ahead of the exhibition, a judging session took place to select this year’s award-winning pieces. Seven notable works were recognized:
1. Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Award -
