Introduction
The Japan Mobile Architecture Association (JMAA) has announced the significance of the newly established GX ZEH (Zero Energy Housing) standards, set to officially begin certification in 2027. This initiative by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry represents a critical milestone in pursuing sustainable housing solutions and the carbon-neutral societal model that the country aims to achieve.
What is GX ZEH?
Unveiled in September 2025, the GX ZEH standards advance the previous ZEH benchmark, aiming to enhance both energy efficiency and the reliance on self-generated renewable energy. This next-generation standard is designed to foster a more robust housing performance framework in Japan.
Key Requirements
The GX ZEH standards outline specific requirements:
- - Insulation Class 6: Ensuring superior thermal performance in residences.
- - Reduction of Primary Energy Consumption: The standards mandate at least a 35% decrease in energy consumption (excluding energy generation).
- - Mandatory Installation of Storage Batteries: The size requirement has been revised to allow flexibility, ensuring installation without a specified capacity.
- - Mandatory HEMS (Home Energy Management Systems): Performance criteria are in place to guarantee energy monitoring and management within households.
Initially, the proposal stipulated a minimum storage battery capacity of 5kWh; however, following public feedback, this criterion has been adjusted to prioritize mandatory installation without a defined capacity. While the current ZEH standards will continue to apply through 2030—focusing on insulation class 5 and a 20% energy reduction—the GX ZEH aspires to set a higher performance benchmark for the housing market.
Importance of the GX ZEH Standards
The JMAA's mission is to provide sustainable housing solutions, considering both everyday needs and disaster preparedness. Promoting GX ZEH is seen as instrumental in fostering self-sufficient renewable energy use and enhancing community resilience, particularly from the perspective of mobile housing and local disaster prevention strategies.
Among its members, Eco Works Co., Ltd., is recognized for its proactive approach in the energy efficiency and ZEH sector, playing a pivotal role in facilitating the expansion of GX ZEH adoption.
Future Outlook
With the certification for GX ZEH planned to commence in 2027, the JMAA anticipates vigorous collaboration with its member companies to drive the GX transformation in the housing industry. This effort will significantly contribute towards a sustainable, safe, and secure society for future generations.
