Exploring New Sustainability Through Art and Science: The Bio Re:tual Exhibition

The Bio Re:tual Exhibition: A Fusion of Art and Science

The upcoming exhibition, Bio Re:tual, is set to open at the social issue gallery SIGNAL from June 24 to July 26, 2025, thoughtfully curated by Keiichiro Tao. This event represents Signature Exhibition vol.11, and it tackles the interconnectedness between nature and humanity, diving deep into the exploration of sustainability through the lens of art and science.

Historically, humans have a longstanding tradition of shaping their relationships with nature through rituals—prayers, invocations, and ceremonial practices that symbolize our connections to the environment. These actions embody a space where human and non-human entities meet, resonating through time as they are repeated and reinterpreted over generations.

Artist Spotlight: Mikiko Kamada

Mikiko Kamada, a distinguished artist and a Ph.D. graduate from Chiba University’s Graduate School of Horticulture, focuses on the impact of plants on human life. Her research and creative work revolve around the intimate relationships between humans and flora, leading her to explore how incorporating cyanobacteria—considered the ancestors of chloroplasts—into human existence can promote a sustainable lifestyle.

Cyanobacteria have played a crucial role in the evolution of photosynthesis, originally forming symbiotic relationships with non-photosynthetic organisms. This historical perspective encourages us to rethink our engagement with nature, positioning it not merely as an external resource but as an integral part of our survival and growth in the Anthropocene era. The Bio Re:tual exhibition seeks to redefine these age-old rituals of coexistence, integrating them with contemporary artistic practices and scientific knowledge.

In a time when the words eco-friendly and sustainability resonate globally, Kamada’s work prompts us to reflect on how our ancestors interpreted and represented light—the very essence of life—through art. By combining innovative scientific concepts with artistic expression, she endeavors to reiterate the importance of rituals that can enrich our narratives around sustainability and reverence for nature.

The Role of a Social Issue Gallery

SIGNAL is not merely an art exhibit space; it fosters dialogue concerning hidden societal issues. Visitors are encouraged to engage with and reflect upon the displayed art which tackles various social challenges. Participating in surveys post-visit allows the gallery to collect visitors' sentiments, transforming them into ideas for social problem-solving initiatives. This structure enables a continuous flow of insight that bridges creativity with tangible actions towards societal good.

As we anticipate the Bio Re:tual exhibition, we invite you to reflect on the past and envision a sustainable future. Can we recreate a narrative that intertwines ancient rituals with modern sustainability practices? Join us in this transformative experience that challenges our perceptions and encourages us to cultivate a deeper relationship with the world around us.
