Metro Nashville’s Response to Literacy Declines



Recent data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) revealed a significant drop in U.S. reading scores for 12th graders, marking the lowest levels in decades. In light of this troubling trend, Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) has taken proactive steps to address literacy challenges in secondary education by implementing specific intervention programs aimed at fostering reading skills among middle and high school students.

According to the NAEP results, there has been a concerning 10-point decrease in reading proficiency among 12th graders since the first assessment in 1992. In response to this alarming situation, MNPS has partnered with Wilson Language Training to implement its Just Words® and Wilson Reading System® programs. Chosen through a competitive selection process, these programs are designed especially for students in grades 6-12, aligning with the district's comprehensive literacy goals and initiatives. With over 81,000 students enrolled across 160 schools, this move is part of a broader strategy to enhance literacy instruction and equip educators with the necessary resources to fill foundational reading gaps.

The Just Words® program offers explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling techniques tailored for students who face mild to moderate challenges with reading skills. On the other hand, the Wilson Reading System® is crafted to support students with more significant difficulties, particularly those diagnosed with dyslexia, highlighting MNPS's commitment to addressing the diverse needs of its student population.
