Qwarzo's Innovative Packaging Technology Gains Popularity Among Major Coffee Brands in Europe

Expanding Horizons: Qwarzo's Eco-Friendly Packaging Solution

In an era where sustainability takes center stage, Qwarzo, an Italian firm renowned for its advanced materials in food packaging, stands at the forefront of innovation. Recently, the company announced an ambitious expansion across Europe, fueled by the adoption of its pioneering technology by some of the world’s leading coffee brands, including Starbucks and Lavazza.

A Revolution in Packaging

Founded by Luca Panzeri, Qwarzo has dedicated over 20 years to researching and developing eco-friendly alternatives to plastic coatings used in single-use products. Its flagship product, a mineral-based silica coating, promises to revolutionize the food industry by providing a sustainable replacement for traditional plastic coatings. This breakthrough technology not only safeguards the integrity of various food products but also preserves their taste, marking a significant leap forward in packaging standards.

As Panzeri aptly puts it, "Innovation should be both invisible and impactful." His vision drives Qwarzo’s commitment to provide scalable and responsible solutions that address modern-day challenges. The success of Qwarzo’s silica coating is evident, with over a billion items sold globally, ranging from ice cream spoons and coffee stirrers to cups and plates.

Partnerships Reshaping the Market

The introduction of Qwarzo's technology has seen Starbucks roll out its new cup and lid designs in May 2025, which are now being implemented throughout Europe. Collaborating with Transcend Packaging and Metsä Board, the new cups and lids replace plastic coatings traditionally used in takeaway packaging. Made from fully traceable Northern European cellulose fibres, these cups are not only compostable but also recyclable with paper waste, thus simplifying the recycling process—a critical benefit over conventional options.

As Starbucks announces availability in several European countries, including Italy, Germany, France, and Spain, there is significant excitement over the potential long-term impact of these innovations. Vincent Mooji, director of Circpack by Veolia, highlights the importance of facilitating recycling efforts, pointing out that Qwarzo’s product eliminates a major obstacle faced by traditional takeaway cup systems. The innovative cup’s design means it does not need to be separated from plastics during recycling, further bolstering sustainable practices.

Alongside Starbucks, Lavazza has embraced Qwarzo’s technology in its vending machines in Spain, showcasing the adaptability of these solutions even in high-volume, automated distribution environments. Collaboration with various entities illustrates Qwarzo’s capacity to cater to different market needs, enhancing its reputation across sectors.

Certification and Recognition

Qwarzo takes pride in having its products certified compostable at home by DIN CERTCO, in addition to being recyclable like paper and exempt from the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive. The absence of intentionally added PFAS and microplastics not only meets regulatory standards but also assures customers about product safety and compostability. Key accolades, such as the
