Exploring the Asymmetric Beauty of TeamLab Borderless in Tokyo

A New Era of Art at TeamLab Borderless

The Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson TeamLab Borderless in Tokyo's Azabudai Hills is set to re-open the stunning art space known as "Light Sculpture - Flow" on July 8, 2026. To celebrate this occasion, a special exhibition titled "Asymmetry of the Universe" will be held until October 8, 2026.

Exploring the New Series

Asymmetric Existence

The "Asymmetric Existence" features a captivating fusion of light sculptures that exist solely in actual space and those that only appear in reflective surfaces, yet they manifest as a singular sculpture in the mind of the observer. Traditionally, mirrors are designed to reflect real space in a symmetric manner. However, in this space, the actual and mirrored realms break this symmetry. Each light sculpture emerges distinctly in its respective space, presenting an asymmetric existence that, when perceived, coalesces into one artistic entity.

The mirror surface transcends its role as merely a reflective boundary, serving instead as a connection point between the real and mirrored spaces. The "Asymmetric Existence" invites audiences to experience a shift in sculptural understanding—from viewing objects confined within real space to recognizing them as integrated experiences that cross the boundaries of perception.

Chromatic Existence

On the other hand, the "Chromatic Existence" showcases the flowing spectrum of red, green, and blue hues, illustrating how colors can form an order unto themselves. This sculpture does not take the form of a physical object; instead, it represents a spatial essence devoid of material boundaries, born from the orchestration of colors in motion.

Light Sculpture - Flow

The piece "Light Sculpture - Flow" embodies the concept that the internal and external nature of a whirlpool in the ocean comprises the same water. While material differences do not exist, why does one feel the presence and even life within the whirlpool? The distinction between the inside and the outside lies not in the material itself but rather in the differences in order. This piece suggests a new mode of existence that diverges from traditional material presence.

When elements of the artwork are temporally and spatially distanced, the formations of order among the pieces foster a singular experience transcending the limits of space and time. The flows of light that continuously transition from the outer form to the inner core—and vice versa—create a sculptural order that is as mesmerizing as it is profound.

TeamLab Borderless: An Immersive Experience

The essence of TeamLab Borderless lies in its seamless blend of various artistic experiences, creating a "museum without maps." Visitors can delve deeply into the immersive art world where boundaries between artworks dissolve, encouraging exploration, discovery, and continued engagement. The environment allows guests to physically inhabit a world of art that flows and interacts dynamically.

To celebrate this innovative approach, the space invites visitors to wander through this continuous realm of creativity, thereby allowing themselves to be enveloped by the fusion of art that transcends conventional exhibit formats.

Practical Information

The museum operates from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM, with final entries allowed one hour before closing. Special dining experiences at EN TEA HOUSE complement the visit, but note that this space opens half an hour after the museum and closes 30 minutes before.
