Promotool Launches Second Generation Perfumer Training Program in Japan

Promotool Unveils Next Generation Perfumer Training Program

Promotool Inc., a leading scent technology company based in Bunkyo, Tokyo, is excited to announce the launch of its Second Generation Perfumer Training Program. This follows the successful entry of its first program graduate, Haruno Suzuki, who joined the company as a full-time perfumer in May 2026.

With the expansion of its business, Promotool seeks to recruit talented individuals skilled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to explore the world of fragrances. The program aims to create world-class perfumers from individuals without prior experience.

Overview of the Training Program

The unique four-year training program is designed for university students, graduate students, and graduates under 29 years old. Held at Promotool's Fragrance Technology Research Institute in Saitama, the program features comprehensive training on:
  • - Analyzing molecular structures of fragrances
  • - Understanding the physicochemical properties of aromatic compounds
  • - Utilizing artificial intelligence to optimize fragrance profiles
  • - Designing fragrance diffusion in spaces

Under the mentorship of Japan's top perfumers, including Takeshi Watanabe, participants will gain hands-on experience using over 3,000 fragrance materials and advanced analytical tools, including robotics for rapid prototyping.

The core of this program lies in a scientific approach to interpreting scents as data and logically constructing formulations. It provides a rare and holistic educational environment for future perfumers to master everything from product planning to formulation development and safety evaluations.

Key Benefits of the Program

One of the standout features of this program is its focus on the quantification and structuring of fragrances. The value of scent is being rapidly redefined in terms of brand experience and wellbeing. Promotool aims to scientifically reconstruct the traditionally artisanal fragrance processes and implement them in the marketplace. Interns will participate in practical experiences to develop essential skills, including:
  • - Early acquisition and systematization of fragrance molecular characteristics and structures
  • - Training in formulation development based on analytical data
  • - One-on-one mentorship from acclaimed perfumer Takeshi Watanabe, blending sensibility and logic
  • - Scientific experimentation processes utilizing cutting-edge research facilities

This distinctive training structure is rare in Japan, helping interns like Haruno Suzuki engage deeply with specialized academic pursuits, such as fragrance identification and verbalizing scents, while also participating in the formulation development process. After joining the company, they will be involved in both fragrance development and supporting safety and quality processes early in their careers.

About Haruno Suzuki

Haruno Suzuki studied applied chemistry at Seikei University and worked in a molecular device research lab focusing on functional analysis at the molecular level. This led her to discover her passion for scents, resulting in her application for the training program after gaining practical experience in a niche fragrance boutique. She states:
"There are limited opportunities for gaining experience as a perfumer in Japan, making it hard to connect theory to practice. My childhood interest in scents transformed into a curiosity about their molecular compositions during my chemistry studies. I was drawn to this program by its hands-on exposure to real-world fragrance development."

During her internship, Suzuki confronted the challenges of identifying premium raw materials and distilling scents into words, culminating in the excitement of witnessing the concept of a fragrance crystallize into reality. Her role broadened once she joined the team, allowing her to engage in scientific experimentation that underscores the logical depth involved in fragrance formulation—from development to safety assessments.

She emphasizes:
"The perfumer profession requires a diverse knowledge base encompassing chemistry, biology, information science, and statistical analysis. For those wanting to articulate scents or create new olfactory experiences, this program offers a unique and challenging environment. I aim to replicate fruity scents with natural ingredients in future projects."

Future Prospects

Promotool Inc. is dedicated to enriching Japan's fragrance culture by continuing to expand the perfumer training program and recruit new students. The company aspires to pass on the expertise and sensitivity cultivated within its team while leveraging knowledge in chemistry, life sciences, and information technology to train the next generation of perfumers. With the goal of fostering professionals who can thrive globally, the firm remains committed to furthering the art and science of scent.
