Record Number of U.S. Parents Explore New K-12 School Options in Recent Year
In an unprecedented shift within the U.S. education landscape, a recent survey conducted by the National School Choice Awareness Foundation (NSCAF) has revealed that over 46 million parents explored the option of changing schools for their children last year. This figure signifies a dramatic five-year high, demonstrating the increasing number of families re-evaluating educational opportunities available to their children.
The survey encompassed responses from nearly 4,000 parents, illustrating a notable leap in school consideration rates from 60% in the previous year to a significant 75% in 2025. Approximately 21% of these parents, translating to around 13.3 million, successfully enrolled their children in new educational environments, highlighting a real commitment to exploring different schooling options.
Interestingly, most families who made the move stated that their decisions were based on practical necessities rather than discontent with previous schools. The primary reasons cited included instances such as children starting school for the first time (20%), transitioning between different educational levels (26%), and families relocating to new neighborhoods (16%). Only 32% of participants indicated that unhappiness with their child’s previous school was the main factor in their decision-making process.
When it came to selecting new schools, parents prioritized safety and support in the educational environment as their foremost concern (61%). This was closely followed by a positive social atmosphere (47%) and a specific educational approach—such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), arts, or faith-based learning—chosen by 39% of parents.
The survey also highlighted optimism for future trends, with many parents indicating they plan to continue exploring school options; a staggering 62% expressed a likelihood to consider alternative schooling for their children in 2026. Andrew Campanella, CEO of NSCAF, shared insights on the evolving education landscape, stating that the surge in interest has been supported by legislative changes across more than 30 states, which have expanded public and private educational choices.
Moreover, as nontraditional learning environments and new schooling options continue to emerge, the search for educational avenues is evolving from a niche consideration to a standard expectation among parents. Campanella emphasized the ongoing effort required to assist the 54% of parents who began the search process but did not find a suitable educational environment.
To support families in their search for optimal educational opportunities, National School Choice Week, scheduled from January 25 to 31, will feature over 28,000 events nationwide. These gatherings will include school fairs, open houses, and informative sessions across approximately 80% of U.S. counties.
