The Unseen Black Nikka Exhibition: A Taste of History and Innovation
The Unseen Black Nikka Exhibition recently kicked off with an exciting opening event held on April 6, 2026, at Tokyu Plaza Harajuku's Harakadō in the bustling Harajuku district of Tokyo. Hosted by Asahi Beer Co. and Nikka Whisky Co., the event showcased the brand's legacy and its latest product, the Black Nikka Clear Highball, which is set to hit the shelves on April 7.
The atmosphere was electrifying, with popular comedy duo, New York's Kazuyasu Shimasa and Hiromasa Yashiki, engaging the audience through various activities. Keisuke Fukuma, head of Nikka Whisky's Japan division, opened the event with a comprehensive introduction to the Black Nikka brand, a staple in the whisky market that has recently revamped its identity in celebration of its 70th anniversary.
A Comedic Touch with the Duo New York
Following Fukuma's address, the New York duo took to the stage to add a layer of humor and engagement to the proceedings. They shared their impressions of Black Nikka, noting its familiarity and nostalgia in their lives. Yashiki reminisced about the brand's significance, saying, "I have a long history with this whisky, even during its less popular times. It's an iconic drink; anyone can recognize it by its label." Shimasa, commenting on the brand's refreshed look, emphasized, "Black Nikka has become more stylish with its new label design. It has evolved into something more appealing."
The event featured interactive sessions where the comedians discussed the theme of "natural moments" related to the new highball's concept, "A Clear Time Begins." They lightheartedly described each other's natural personas, with Shimasa pointing to Yashiki's newfound passion for golf as a sign of maturity.
Participants in the audience were thrilled when the duo opened a giant beverage cooler to serve the first samples of the Black Nikka Clear Highball. As they tasted the refreshing new drink, both remarked on its pleasantness and suitability for the approaching warmer seasons. "It's so smooth! Perfect for this time of year," they exclaimed, generating a buzz around the product's debut.
Creating Unique Experiences with Personalization
The exhibition not only celebrated the launch of the Black Nikka Clear Highball but also offered various interactive experiences for guests. The highlight was the opportunity to engage with the brand's famous motto, "King of Blenders," where attendees could participate in name-generating activities. Shimasa humorously chose the name 'Higedansha-kun' (Beard Boy), while Yashiki decided on 'Oni-Koshi Tomahawk Kin-chan', both embodying their unique styles and drawing laughter from the audience.
One of the most innovative features was a custom can creation station where guests could combine their selfies with the iconic brand image. Presenting their personalized cans to the audience, both Shimasa and Yashiki expressed joy and excitement at their printed bottles. "This is so cute! I might add it to my collection!" laughed Shimasa, while Yashiki noted it would be great for display or sharing on social media.
The Exciting Black Nikka Squad
As the event came to a close, Shimasa made a dramatic re-entry carrying a large can of highball. He represented the newly formed Black Nikka Squad, announcing their role in spreading the brand globally. With exuberance, he shouted, "We are the Black Nikka Squad, ready to spread the Black Nikka spectacle worldwide!" This proclamation was met with a playful quip from Yashiki, who humorously remarked, “You’re too loud!” fostering a lively atmosphere in the venue.
Guests joined in responding to their unique catchphrase, enthusiastically shouting back, "Highball!" as Shimasa and Yashiki rallied their squad.
As the event wrapped up, Shimasa reflected positively on his experience, expressing happiness at being part of the well-known Black Nikka event and his newfound insights into the product. Yashiki echoed these sentiments, encouraging attendees to explore the Harajuku location during the event’s run, which concludes on April 12, 2026.
Looking Forward to the Future of Black Nikka
Fukuma reiterated the brand’s commitment to excellence, sharing three major initiatives marking the 70th anniversary: a significant design overhaul, a new advertising campaign, and the introduction of the Black Nikka Clear Highball product line. "We anticipate explosive growth for Black Nikka. We invite everyone to experience the unique blend of whisky we offer," he concluded.
With the Unseen Black Nikka Exhibition ongoing, whisky enthusiasts are encouraged to visit and engage in the world of Black Nikka.
