The UAE FoodTech Challenge 2026 has concluded, recognizing four pioneering startups during the prestigious Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. This global competition aims to discover and scale groundbreaking agri-tech solutions that address food security challenges worldwide. The competing startups emerged from an impressive pool of 1,215 submissions from across 113 countries, showcasing the creativity and potential that exists within the agri-food sector.
Winning Startups and Their Innovations
1. Permia Sensing
Permia Sensing is leveraging cutting-edge technology to promote sustainable agriculture. Utilizing AI and bioacoustic sensors, this innovative startup is monitoring the health of palm trees across 15,000 hectares in Sri Lanka. Their solution allows farmers to detect stress from dehydration and pest infestations early, thus boosting yields and minimizing waste. The next step for Permia involves collaborating with local partners to adapt and enhance their approach specifically for the UAE's unique agricultural landscape.
2. HyveGeo
HyveGeo has devised a unique circular approach by transforming agricultural waste into a nutrient-rich biochar. By enriching this biochar with beneficial microbes, they create a high-performance soil enhancer that is already being implemented by farmers across the UAE. As winners of the challenge, they aim to expand research and pilot projects into regions within the Global South.
3. Akorn Technology
Focusing on food loss and waste reduction, Akorn Technology has developed a natural, edible coating that extends the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. This innovative solution, which incorporates a vegetable protein, a moisture-reducing wax, and a color-retaining oil, is currently operating in Egypt and Ghana. The startup's goal is to optimize its application for the arid conditions of the UAE.
4. Flybox
Flybox is transforming agricultural byproducts into valuable protein and fertilizer using black soldier fly larvae, while also reducing waste sent to landfills. Their cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution is currently utilized in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria. The startup plans to deploy this initiative in the UAE, collaborating with local waste management organizations.
Supporting Global Food Security
The UAE FoodTech Challenge stands at the crossroads of innovation and practical application. Each winning team will share a prize of USD 2 million, providing them with vital resources to launch and scale their solutions within the UAE. Participants will gain access to pilot programs, research facilities, market-entry strategies, mentorship, and connections with potential investors.
Rima Al Mokarrab, Chair of Tamkeen and Co-Chair of the FoodTech Challenge, emphasized the importance of resilient and secure food systems for the UAE's long-term vision. The winners will join a community of previous awardees who have collectively raised over USD 48 million in follow-on funding and initiated over 50 pilot projects both in the UAE and in various global markets.
Fatema Almulla from the UAE Presidential Court added, "The UAE plays a leading role in international development. Through the FoodTech Challenge, we are embedding startups in a proven ecosystem where innovation is translated into measurable impact."
