Celebrating 90 Years of Jiro Tsunoda: A Special Manga Exhibition

Celebrating 90 Years of Jiro Tsunoda

This summer, the Tokiwasou Manga Museum is thrilled to announce a special exhibition commemorating the remarkable legacy of manga artist Jiro Tsunoda. Kicking off on August 8, 2023, this exhibition celebrates the artist’s 90th birthday with the theme "Let's Draw Anything!". Known for his iconic works such as "Fear Newspaper" and "Behind Hyakutaro", Tsunoda has left an indelible mark on the world of horror manga. Yet, he sees these distinguished genres as merely facets of his extensive oeuvre.

The exhibition serves as the first solo showcase dedicated to Tsunoda, presenting a retrospective of his diverse creative journey over the past decades. With the guiding principles of “Let’s know everything!” and “Let’s try anything!”, the exhibition will feature more than 90 handwritten original manuscripts, highlighting Tsunoda’s unyielding curiosity and creative zeal.

In addition to these manuscripts, the exhibition will also reveal rare materials from the Tokiwasou era. Visitors can look forward to an exclusive debut of interview footage captured this July, extending insights into Tsunoda's profound impact on manga and the artistic techniques he employed throughout his career.

A representative from the district remarked during a preview event, "The greatest charm of this exhibition lies in its extraordinary breadth of expression and the exuberant curiosity Tsunoda embodies. His constant drive to challenge unknown realms of creativity is sure to inspire the next generation of creators. We invite you to experience the beauty of his hand-drawn illustrations and feel Tsunoda’s passionate message firsthand!"
