Empowering Future Tradeswomen: Northern Tool's Hands-On Experience at Sons of Speed

Empowering Future Tradeswomen at Sons of Speed

In an inspiring initiative, the Tools for the Trades™ program from Northern Tool + Equipment recently organized a hands-on experience day for female high school students at the Sons of Speed vintage motorcycle race in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. This event aimed to foster interest in trade careers among young women and provide them with an opportunity to learn directly from successful women already working in various trades.

Creating Opportunities

The event welcomed 50 ambitious female shop class students from Volusia County's Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, effectively igniting their passions for hands-on work. During the day, they engaged in a vibrant learning environment filled with motivational conversations and shared experiences led by women paving the way in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Billy Lane, the founder of Sons of Speed, commented on the energy the female students brought to the track, saying, "Hosting a crew of young women fired up about the trades brought a new energy to the track—serious talent, passion, and a whole lot of hope for the future of this industry."

Learning From the Best

The students had the unique opportunity to learn from four dynamic women thriving in their respective trades:
  • - Jody Perewitz: A world-class custom painter and vintage motorcycle racer known for her land-speed records.
  • - Shelly Rossmeyer Pepe: A former Harley-Davidson dealership owner and general manager.
  • - Marilyn Stemp: A writer, editor, and photographer specializing in motorcycle industry media.
  • - Dystany Spurlock: A female truck driver who also drag races on weekends.

Dystany Spurlock emphasized the importance of events like this, stating, "I know the importance of breaking barriers in male-dominated industries. This event proves women belong in any field they choose." Similarly, Jody Perewitz remarked, "Giving these young women the chance to see the trades and motorcycle racing up close demonstrates that no industry is off-limits."

Addressing a Nationwide Shortage

Established in 2021, the Tools for the Trades™ program is a vital response to the nationwide shortage of skilled tradespeople. It offers students and educators access to professional-grade tools and equipment, alongside unique learning experiences such as the track days hosted at Sons of Speed.
