Huawei Unveils Innovative IDS Features at CIRED 2025 to Transform Future Distribution Networks

Huawei's Innovations at CIRED 2025

From June 16 to 19, 2025, the Congrès International des Réseaux Electriques de Distribution (CIRED 2025) was held, bringing together industry leaders to discuss the future of electric distribution networks. Huawei took this opportunity to unveil the latest advancements in its Intelligent Distribution Solution (IDS). This event saw participation from 129 companies and over 2,600 industry experts from 72 countries, aiming to network and attend technical workshops.

Challenges in Current Distribution Networks

In recent years, global electric distribution networks have faced a myriad of challenges, including frequent power outages, low network resilience, outdated infrastructure, and limited adoption of renewable energies. The increasing scale of distributed loads, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles (EVs), has placed immense pressure on the operations and maintenance (OM) of traditional electric systems.

Huawei's IDS Solution

In response to these pressing issues, Huawei's IDS leverages a comprehensive architecture known as “cloud-pipeline-edge-pipeline-device.” By integrating advanced technologies such as high-speed power line communication (HPLC) and edge computing units (ECUs), Huawei’s IDS offers transparent detection and proactive operations and maintenance. This innovative approach enables customers to respond swiftly to faults, enhance network resilience against severe natural disasters, and improve user satisfaction.

To date, Huawei's IDS has been adopted extensively in China and rigorously tested by over 20 electric distribution companies worldwide. In the Asia-Pacific region, IDS has markedly improved the speed of outage detection to under two minutes and reduced line loss rates by approximately 20%.

New Features Introduced

During CIRED 2025, Huawei launched a new customized IDS feature that addresses issues related to unobservable, immeasurable, and uncontrollable devices and environments within power distribution rooms. Utilizing AI-driven and IoT-enabled detection devices, Huawei constructed a comprehensive environmental monitoring network capable of functioning under various climatic conditions. This system provides real-time alerts around the clock.

Thanks to efficient data processing through AI and its responsive capabilities, timely alerts for environmental risks and proactive maintenance for equipment can now be achieved, transforming traditional passive management into proactive prevention. This ensures clients can better handle the impacts of extreme weather conditions on power supplies, enhancing reliability and extending equipment lifespan.

Sharing Best Practices and Standardization Efforts

Alongside showcasing IDS advancements, Huawei, with the backing of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), organized an IDS Rump Session during the event. This session was dedicated to sharing practical insights and collaboration strategies to aid customers in driving the digital and intelligent transformation of distribution networks. Huawei continues to advocate for international standards in the electric distribution sector, participating in significant initiatives such as the 5th meeting of the IEEE P 2413.2 Working Group. This effort aims to promote standardization and international development in the electrical industry, facilitating the construction of communication networks for distribution and addressing technical challenges in medium voltage return networks and low voltage transparency.

Conclusion

With the introduction of these new IDS features, Huawei reinforces its commitment to technological innovation and practical applications in electrical distribution management. The enhancements aim to assist customers in implementing transparent management of low voltage devices, highlighting Huawei's pivotal role in shaping the future of smart electricity distribution networks.
