Special Program for the Deaflympics
In October, a special theme around 'Sports' will enhance the experience as it coincides with the Deaflympics Tokyo 2025, the first such event to take place in Japan. Participants will engage in a program focused around non-verbal communication through sports, providing a unique insight and encouragement to enjoy the Deaflympics more fully.
Event Background
This year, November marks the historic occurrence of the Deaflympics in Japan, a prestigious event that showcases athletes who are deaf or hard of hearing. Since its inception in 1924, the Deaflympics has not only been a platform for sports but also a stage for sharing the rich culture and various modes of communication of the deaf community worldwide. The event will bring together athletes and spectators from all corners of the globe, making it a melting pot of cultures beyond borders and languages. To fully appreciate and connect with the Deaflympics, understanding diverse communication styles is essential.
What to Expect at 'Dialogue in Silence'
Dialogue in Silence offers a hands-on opportunity to experience various modes of communication that transcend language barriers. In this immersive program, participants will don sound-blocking headsets and interact under the guidance of professional deaf facilitators, engaging in non-verbal dialogue. This unique experience enhances participants' observational skills, concentration, and creativity while allowing them to discover new methods of communication without spoken words. Through body language and other non-verbal means, even those who speak different languages can establish profound connections.
The program has been held globally since its conception in Germany in 1998, with successful events in countries like France, Israel, Mexico, Turkey, and China. With over 1 million participants worldwide, it was first brought to Japan in 2017, where more than 24,000 individuals have since participated. The program has gained recognition as a valuable educational tool, being implemented in schools and corporate training to teach communication diversity and a coexistence society to individuals of all ages.
