Soy Milk Production in Japan Sees Remarkable Growth by Mid-2024

Soy Milk Production Thrives in Japan: A Mid-2024 Review

Japan's soy milk industry is witnessing a significant recovery, as confirmed by the latest report from the Japan Soy Milk Association, released on July 16, 2024. The production volume of soy milk for the first half of 2024 reached 193,279 kiloliters, marking a 101.4% increase compared to the same period last year. This marks a substantial achievement after years of stagnation in the soy milk market.

Rise in Production Volumes

In examining the production figures categorized by type, "unsweetened soy milk" has notably increased its volume to 63,443 kiloliters, reflecting a remarkable growth rate of 104.5%. At the same time, the more widely consumed "sweetened soy milk" also showed a minor increase to 92,283 kiloliters, registering a growth of 100.9%. Other categories, including "fruit-flavored soy milk drinks," totaled 7,949 kiloliters, showing a slight increase of 101.1%. However, flavored soy milk drinks, which include coffee and tea variants, recorded a decline to 23,389 kiloliters (96.9%), indicating mixed trends within this segment. The overall trends in shipping volumes mirrored these production figures.

Factors Behind the Recovery

Despite rising costs across many food and beverage sectors, the soy milk market's recovery can be attributed to a growing emphasis on health-conscious living among consumers. The increasing awareness of plant-based beverages has led many to return to soy milk as a viable option for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Japan Soy Milk Association, under the leadership of Chairman Koichi Yamazaki, also highlighted ongoing efforts to promote the nutritional benefits of soy milk, such as low-calorie content and high nutritional value. The rise in repeat and heavy consumers, who are purchasing soy milk online, has played a crucial role in this market rejuvenation.

Aiming for Sustainability

The Japan Soy Milk Association aims to further increase the per capita annual consumption of soy milk to 4 liters (up from 3.2 liters reported in 2023, based on a population of 125 million) and to achieve a total annual production target of 500,000 kiloliters. To reach these ambitious goals, the association plans to engage in various awareness and promotional activities throughout the year.

The soy milk sector's resurgence is not just a fleeting trend but appears to be part of a broader shift towards healthier food choices driven by consumer demand.

These figures, however, are preliminary, and more detailed statistics for the period from April to June will be disclosed in August 2024.
