Japan's First CO2-Eating Vending Machine: A Step Towards a Carbon-Neutral Society

In a significant development for environmental sustainability, the Yoshikei Group, renowned for their meal kit delivery services, has collaborated with Asahi Beverage to introduce Japan's first ``CO2-eating vending machine'' in Nagano Prefecture. This initiative aims to promote carbon neutrality while catering to modern consumer needs.

Concept Behind the CO2-Eating Vending Machine

Asahi Beverage has pioneered this innovative concept under the motto of creating “forests in urban areas.” The project commenced with a trial phase in June 2023, with full deployment scheduled for 2024, aiming to install 50,000 units by 2030. Each machine is expected to absorb up to 60 kg of CO2 annually, equating to the yearly absorption of approximately 20 cedar trees. This venture marks a notable effort in Japan toward achieving a decarbonized society and has received patent protection (Patent No. 7282338) for its technology.

The CO2 absorbed by these machines will be repurposed in partnerships with local governments and businesses. Applications include ingredients for asphalt and concrete, contributing to CO2 fixation and environmental restoration through blue carbon ecosystems.

Contribution to Reducing Environmental Impact

The Yoshikei Group has consistently strived to minimize environmental impacts across their operations. They offer customized, secure delivery boxes named “Anshin Box” to eliminate food delivery reattempts, thereby reducing CO2 emissions from their fleet of about 4,700 vehicles.
