Japan Pavilion to Showcase Cocoa Bioplastics and Ceramides at COP30

Japan Pavilion at COP30: Showcasing Cocoa Innovations

As the world gears up for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Japan is set to make a significant mark with its dedicated exhibition. Between November 17 and 20, 2025, the Japan Pavilion will be launched in Belém, Brazil, showcasing remarkable innovations that focus on sustainability and environmental conservation.

Leading the charge is Meiji Co., Ltd., which will present their groundbreaking products, including cocoa bioplastics and cocoa ceramides. These innovative materials stem from unused parts of the cocoa plant and aim to address the pressing issues of climate change while contributing positively to the circular economy.

The Innovations: Cocoa Bioplastics and Ceramides

Cocoa Bioplastics

One of the stars of the exhibition, cocoa bioplastics, is a result of a collaboration between Meiji and Hemicellulose Co. This unique resin, formulated with cocoa pod husks, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics. It has shown the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30-60% compared to its fossil-fuel counterparts. The attributes of this bioplastic, which combines hardness with flexibility, make it suitable for a wide range of applications. For instance, Meiji has previously incorporated cocoa bioplastics into its sustainable “Learn and Play! Mushroom Mountain” product's packaging, and it is also being utilized in toys and writing instruments.

What's more, at COP30, Meiji will introduce items such as the “Cocoa G-Jacket” and “Cocoa Jeans,” both crafted from cocoa denim made with cocoa bioplastics and organic cotton. These products are projected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 8% compared to traditional denim, aligning perfectly with global warming mitigation efforts.

Cocoa Ceramides

Meiji has taken a pioneering step by becoming the first in the world to successfully create cocoa-derived ceramides. These are moisturizing agents extracted from cocoa pod husks and have promising applications in both food and cosmetics. Through their “Cocoa Beauté” brand, Meiji aims to expand its portfolio with chocolate and jelly products, showcasing the versatility of this innovative ingredient.

Sustainable Cocoa Production Initiatives

Meiji has long been committed to sustainable cocoa farming practices, reflected through their ongoing “Meiji Cocoa Support” initiative since 2006. This program focuses on supporting cocoa farmers while ensuring sustainable agricultural practices. One important region is Tome-Açu, located near Belém, where the farmers are employing agroforestry methods, a sustainable farming approach that allows for creating diverse ecosystems. Meiji's adherence to this philosophy ensures the long-term usability of soils while protecting forests. An exemplary product that illustrates this commitment is the “Agroforestry Milk Chocolate,” made with cocoa beans cultivated under these sustainable practices.

Contributions to Climate Change Solutions

Through these innovations and sustainable practices, Meiji aims to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and the financial upliftment of cocoa farmers. The use of cocoa’s unused parts not only creates value but also helps achieve vital goals relating to the circular economy and climate change solutions. Moving forward, Meiji plans to deepen its sustainable initiatives by further enhancing support for cocoa-producing regions while innovating in the field of upcycling to boost the profitability and sustainability of cocoa production.
