Innovative Financial Education Workshop for Parents and Kids: Building Future Money Skills

Innovative Financial Education Workshop for Parents and Kids

On August 26, 2026, the first-ever family-oriented financial education event titled "Learn Together This Summer! - Money Workshop for the Future" was held at the Mizuho Marunouchi Tower. The event was a collaboration among the TAPP Corporation, Mizuho Financial Group, Mizuho Bank, and the J-FLEC (Financial Education Promotion Organization).

The initiative aimed to empower parents and children to learn about financial literacy through engaging activities. Participants were introduced to a variety of programs incorporating iPads for quiz games and virtual investment simulations, where children gained insightful knowledge about distinguishing between needs and wants, the dangers of cashless transactions, and investment fundamentals.

A Day Filled with Learning

Children participated in hands-on sessions that demystified investment concepts, leading to a deeper understanding of financial responsibility. The workshops were structured to give youths a solid grounding in the importance of saving and spending wisely, while parents took part in seminars focused on household budgeting and asset formation.

Voices from Participants
Several children expressed their excitement about being able to invest in a simulated environment. One child shared, "I felt really happy to be able to invest. If it were me, I'd like to practice 'diversified investing.'" Another mentioned, "I learned that investment exists to support companies. I also now understand how to differentiate between what I need versus what I want."

One parent reflected, "It was enlightening to revisit the topic of investment and budgeting. I also enjoyed participating in the investment game with my child. I was pleased to see them grasp the concept of 'self-investment.'" Another remarked, "Learning that investment can have negative outcomes was refreshing, as other games I’ve encountered only focus on guaranteed profits. Here, the risk factor was highlighted, which is essential for real-world investing."

Event Highlights

The ceremony began with remarks from executives, including Mr. Kurosawa from Mizuho Financial Group, who emphasized the importance of financial education. He pointed out that, unlike in the United States, opportunities to learn about finance in schools or workplaces in Japan are limited. He encouraged families to engage in discussions about money management at home.

The workshop included a dual approach:
1. For Children – "Mizuho’s Money Fantasia: Learning Financial Management in a Magical World."
- Kids engaged with iPads and took part in quizzes about the uses of money, including essential lessons on distinguishing between needs and wants and understanding investment.
2. For Parents – A special seminar offering insights into household management, child-rearing, and practical financial knowledge.

The parent sessions covered various topics, such as:
  • - Key expenditure review points, separating needs from wants (distinguishing priorities and expenses).
  • - Revisiting life planning based on anticipated events and budgeting appropriately.
  • - Awareness of inflation risks affecting savings and investments, alongside methods of mitigating investment risks (such as diversification and long-term strategies).

Hands-On Investment Experience

In the second half, families participated in an engaging investment simulation called "Kids' Investment Challenge!" Here, they listened to presentations from business owners, followed by choosing where to invest play money, providing both children and parents a practical understanding of investment dynamics.

It was evident from the participants' responses that the event wasn't just educational but also entertaining. Many enjoyably noted how fun it is to learn about money through games. The initiative aims to instill a sense of financial literacy in children, paving the way for their future economic independence.

Closing Remarks

As the event concluded, Mr. Otomo from J-FLEC summarized the day's learning, encouraging the children to cultivate discernment regarding spending and investment. He emphasized the importance of speaking to family members about financial troubles rather than handling concerns alone, reinforcing that the community is supportive and values open discussions about money.

Lastly, attendees received “Money Doctor Certification” as a keepsake, highlighting the day's accomplishments. The organizers, including TAPP and Mizuho, plan to continue fostering financial literacy through ongoing workshops and community outreach.
