TOKYO FM Embraces Solar Energy for Broadcasting
In a significant move towards sustainability, TOKYO FM, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at its relay stations in Ome and Hachioji. This installation marks a new chapter in effective energy management for broadcasting operations. The company officially commenced operation of these solar systems on July 6, 2026.
Enhancing Energy Independence
The newly established PV facilities will not only produce electricity but also innovate the way energy is stored. These systems install a total of eight PV panels at the Ome relay station, generating a combined output of 5.7 kW using solar energy. Additionally, a hybrid inverter and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system has been set up at the Hachioji relay station, which can store up to 5 kW of energy.
This dual approach of energy generation and storage ensures that in the event of a power outage, TOKYO FM can maintain operations by utilizing stored solar power. By implementing a robust backup power system, the reliability and safety of its broadcasting services are significantly enhanced.
Cost-effective Solutions
The decision to adopt globally recognized IEC standards for the equipment played a crucial role in keeping installation costs low. The initiative also involved in-house construction processes, allowing the company to achieve a return on investment in approximately six years, notably shorter than the standard recovery period of 10 to 15 years.
TOKYO FM’s commitment to renewable energy showcases its alignment with Tokyo's HTT (Reduce, Generate, Store Power) initiative, illustrating the network's dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
