Okayama University Hosts the LBS Forum Setouchi
On November 28, 2025, the LBS Forum Setouchi was held at the Sanyo Shimbun Main Hall in a hybrid format. Organized by the Nikkei Inc. and Television Setouchi, this forum brought together leaders from local businesses to discuss the potential of the local economy.
President Nasu's Insights
President Yasuyuki Nasu represented Okayama University during the second session of the forum, delivering a compelling talk titled "The Role of Universities in Communities: The Challenges Faced by Okayama University." He emphasized the enduring goal of achieving sustainable and diverse well-being for all individuals connected with Okayama University, including past, present, and future stakeholders.
Key Initiatives and Collaborations
President Nasu highlighted various initiatives, such as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's J-PEAKS program, which aims to enhance regional core research universities. This reflects the university’s commitment to local engagement and innovation.
He also discussed student-driven initiatives, including the Okayama University DS Team and the Okayama Tech Garage. Alongside these, the university is actively involved in activities related to carbon footprints, showcasing its dedication to environmental concerns and local problem-solving.
Innovations from Local Businesses
The first part of the forum featured three business leaders demonstrating their innovative practices. Among them was Okayama Seiko, known for its tabi-style shoes that have garnered support from professional athletes. The company has collaborated with Okayama University's Sports Support Office for over a decade to enhance product development.
Another standout was "the continue.,” a business recycling Bizen pottery shards to create new value. Okayama University has partnered with them to produce and sell original goods, including Bizen ceramic mugs.
Lastly, Japan Fruits presented their unique distribution system for irregular fruits, sharing insightful discussions on cultivating innovation to expand their business ventures. These enterprises showcase the entrepreneurial spirit flourishing in Okayama and its surrounding areas.
